After playing the 360 I enjoyed having arty around.
It kept players from camping bushes and staying still for too long. Yeah, the arty players sat around and hid, but they're arty. That's their job.
When they super nerfed arty during the beta, the amount of camping increased tenfold. I don't know why people rage about arty so much. It's the most important asset of the game to keep it from slowing down and getting boring. If you were getting hit a whole lot, that's because you didn't move very often and made for an easy target.
I was going to write a long reply to this about why I hate arty, but after reading it back, it only sounded incredibly condescending and not a little insulting. Instead, I'll simply strongly disagree with the notion that arty 'speeds' up the game. What arty does, quite simply, is deny the ability to use things like hull down in terrain depressions, and forces players to seek refuge behind large obstacles. Arty, if anything, encourages more camping, only instead of it being behind a bush, its behind a building. It also denies the use of slopes, small rocks, other tanks carcasses, depressions, and any number of other ways in which to go hull down in relatively open areas.
I have never seen an arty free game reduced to camping. I have seen hundreds of 3+ arty a side matches turn into 10 minutes of rock humping.
But I won't clog up this thread with my arty hating. If you wish to know more about why I hate arty and why I left the game, feel free to PM me.

As an artillery-lover I might be a little biased, but on the EU servers at least the vast majority of games containing arty don't become camping games due to their presence. If anything, it's the TD horde games that turn into boring staring competitions, and if I get one of those games in my SPG then I metaphorically salivate at the free kills.
I've found TD hordes to be far more common than massed artillery games, and infinitely more mind-numbing; the first team that tries to actively secure a win is usually the one that dies in flames thanks to WoT's inane camouflage system, and the fact that putting a single track out of line is as good as wrapping your tank in blinking fairy lights and a neon sign that says "Shoot me".
It might be different on US servers, but on EU artillery is far from problematic, especially since the matchmaking for it seems to be mostly alright (I can count the number of 4-5 SPGs per side matches on one hand; the vast majority have 1-2).

This is exactly how things were on the US/ EU (we tended to all get lumped in on the same servers) beta servers for the 360 version a few months ago. I know this because I mainly ran German TD's. Before the arty nerf, I relied heavily on "shoot n scoot" tactics, where I'd pop off a shot or two, then move. If you didn't, you would get annihilated as they would watch for your muzzle flash. You would move and a couple of seconds later without fail an arty round would hit right where you had been sitting. After the nerf (apparently bringing arty in line with how the computer was at the time) I literally could sit in one spot all game and just wrack up kills like crazy. The only time I needed to move was if enemy tanks started to get around me, and then I just backed up so my front armor was angling to as many tanks as possible. Arty went from being seen 2 or 3 every game to one every 3 or 4 matches. It seriously gimped the purpose of light spotting tanks and allowed camping TD's to reign supreme.
Eventually this got boring and I started running mainly light tanks like the Luchs and Chaffee, as a way to break up the crushing boringness that was playing games with a high percentage of camping TD's. I would either park so I could spot TD's and force them to move, or would run in and knock out 2 or 3 in an attempt to make a hole for my team. I'm not joking when I say that TD's could make up 50% of your team at higher levels when I was still playing the beta before the new year came around. Trying to drive anything slower than a Luchs across open terrain was tantamount to suicide, so everyone just camped.
No idea how it is now. Got a PC that can run most games and let my Xbox Live run out. Haven't played the 360 WoT version for a couple months now.

From experience in T5 tanks and below, the only times you'll be one-shotted by TDs are when facing certain tanks 2+ tiers higher than you, or facing derp guns; the M3 Lee as I mentioned earlier is particularly susceptible to various TD-mounted howitzers and the like, and a lucky shot against anything else can cook off your ammo rack and blow you sky high.
Not that being able to shrug off more than one shot matters when you're staring down the barrels of 7 TDs. =|

Tier 9/10 seems hellishly boring. Fire a shot, wait 5 mins to reload, fire again, die in flames.

Do you know how often my ST-I has been one shotted? Once, and that was by pre nerf Foch. One shots become rare after tier VI, unless you are a light tank or a French medium.
Low tier games are rife with them though, anything that can fit a howitzer can one shot on tier and below tanks quite easily and some are abosolute beasts (the Hetzer is a perfect example).
High teir games are a lot more tactical than low tier games, although there tends ot be more camping. Reload times are much longer, you have to actually aim at weakspots for most things and tanks tend to be slower.
You can still go hull down against arty, you just can't sit still and hope to survive. All you need to do is move around within the cover as even a small movement can completely knacker arty's aim.

Now that was a hell of a match; after my third kill I was at 1hp with my gunner dead - went on to get two more (would have been at least one more than that if my gunner had been alive) and missed a last second shot against the last enemy tank - a charging spg that rammed and killed me.

It's quite amusing with these country vs. country matches they have introduced. I think in about the 9 or 10 games that have involved Germans, I've seen them win one and draw one. The win was against Americans (4 kills with my trusty PzIV in that one! ), that are generally considered one of the weaker lines.
The game is great fun if you view it for what it is, really a fun arcade battle that will do its best to suck money out of you.

M4 with the derp gun. The T1 has never impressed me when I face it but the M4 can be irritating.
A 'derp' gun is any large calibre gun (for its tier) that fires HE rounds (Generally 75,105 and 152mm guns). HE rounds almost always do damage (they very rarely richochet) but have quite a low penetration; if you do get a penetration however they do massive damage, often enough to kill your target outright.
I love derp guns.

Going to agree with the M4 Derp. Anything open-topped or a lower tier than you isn't likely to still be standing after 1-2 shots, and anything bigger than you will still feel the pain.

And @ OP the M2 is tier 2 or something isn't it? Hang in there. Tier 2 games usually end up with a bunch of guys tooling about in T18s clubbing everyone else over the head. It'll be better from Tiers 3/4 and onwards.

The only thing guaranteed to work is to buy a premium account. Aside from that simply be useful, EXP and credits are earned for causing damage (kills only give a small bonus), scouting enemy tanks, spotting enemy tanks and capturing/defending points.
One of the major problems with grinding is that starting guns tend to be pretty much useless which makes it difficult to actually cause damage. If you are finding that your shots bounce nearly all the time then load HE rounds, they are pretty useless on most guns but they will do some damage and they have a decent chance of damaging modules. At least this will give you some experience and you won;t be a dead weight for your team.
You may find this useful (its quite complex though). http://wiki.worldoftanks.com/Battle_Mechanics
This is a really good guide

I vouch for this method. That's how I made many of my crappier tanks (including scouts) useful.

Another option is that if you are say moving from 3-4, and you really like your top gun in the tier 3 tank, play that a bit more and get some free XP, and use that (and a wee bit of gold) to skip the bad starter gun/s on your tier 4 tank (insert additional tiers where necessary). For example, I played my Tier 5 British TD, the AT2, for a chunk more games so that I could skip the first two guns on the AT8 (6 pdrs in tier 8 games? No thank you).
That or bite the bullet and buy a Lowe, and use additional gold to transfer over the buckets of free XP you'll make.

Grinding enough free exp can take a very long time though, I usually just bite the bullet and grind my way up (thats what I did with my AT8).
Also tier 8 premium tanks cost about £35/40, I for one am not happy about spending that much money on a digital tank.

Get a lower cost one, then. A lot of people rush toward the Lowe or another T8, but if you're new it's better to pick up something like a locust. MM *tends* to be kind to it, and it's a decent T3 light.
Sadly, the really good ones tend to get removed from store. (Type 59, Pz38H)
