Hello fellows of the Dakka! Odd question here. I am having difficulty locating an exact answer to this question in the rulebook so I am asking it here. My opponent used a squad of Deathmarks with a Cryptek (Harbinger of Despair) to go after my squad of five tactical marines with Brother Corbulo. After Deep Striking with them, he named the Tactical Marine squad as the squad that the 'Marks had preferred Enemy against. He then used the template ability (AP1, Str8 wounds against leadership) to hit my guys on a 2+ (which is completely dumb, but I'm just a bit bitter lol!) My question is: Because Corbulo is joined with the Tactical Unit does he suffer the preferred enemy disadvantage or would the Deathmarks have to name him directly? I am nitpicking a bit here and I understand that but I can't seem to find a way to deal with this stupid, OP combination and it is frankly starting to tick me off. I realize that I am at a severe disadvantage because I am running Blood Angels, but this thing goes on a murder spree pretty easily and I have no way to deal with it. He basically Deep Strikes with them every turn, naming a new unit and blows them away, only to teleport back out and do it again next turn. I feel like my only hope is to hope he has a deep strike mishap and he loses the whole unit. Even Mephiston can't deal with this crap. I am starting to think that Cryptek+Deathmarks may be the best unit in the entire game...so killy. Any Ideas on how to counter this? Sorry for the rant and thanks for the read!

He can't name a new unit every turn - only when they're deployed.

Corbulo would be (as per the IC rules) a part of the unit for all rules purposes, so that would include Preferred Enemy.

I thought that they could name a unit when they Deep Strike, so with the Cryptek's ability to bounce back off that board wouldn't the Deathmark's ability trigger all over again after he Deep Strikes with them again?

He can't. It should be in the necron FAQ if I remember correctly. He can only do so once.
Page 4 of necron FAQ. Last question on the left column. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also it may be controversial if he can Deep Strike the Deathmarks with the Cryptek inside. The Veil of Darkness does not specifically say it grants the Cryptek Deep Strike USR. Thus, he may not come in with the Deathmarks with Deep Strike the first time.

Then how do people get his template ability to hit on 2+? I thought that he could Deep Strike with them?

Well I guess it's controversial. Until an FAQ comes out I guess it can be interpreted both ways. The veil gives the ability to remove the Cryptek and deploy using deep strike rules. It just does not state if the Cryptek gains the deep strike rule.
Edit and for deep strike, all models must have the Deep Strike USR

So perhaps it is legal to have him join the unit later and then use Veil of Darkness and THEN he gets the ability?

However, there is one way it can happen.
Deathmarks put the mark counter when they deploy. If he had deployed them from the first turn (as non deep strike) with the cryptek and then used the veil of darkness to get the crypteks and Deathmarks to close in on the target, this would be legal.

Fly them in on a Scythe, drop them off, let them bounce around after that.

Or it can be as you said as well. Maybe the Cryptek was close by and joined their unit when they came in.

Not really, no.
Even if that was true the FAQ/Errata has this to say:
Page 36 – Deathmarks, Hunters from Hyperspace.
Also add “Note that each unit of Deathmarks may only mark a
single enemy unit during the course of a game”.

Crypteks are never ICs.
They are either part of the deathmark unit from the beginning, or they never are

So this being said he would have to start with the unit on the field with the Cryptek as part of them, THEN use Veil Of Darkness thus he can choose the unit for Preferred Enemy when he deep strikes them baack in? Or do the Deathmarks only get this ability if they start in reserve?

They get it when they're deployed. So he deploys them, marks a unit, and only ever marks that one unit (per the Errata I quoted above).
It's an anti-deathstar unit.

Interesting that you point that out. I must admit I never really looked. Now that I have looked I realize that none of the HQ choices in the necron codex are ICs. And this was not corrected in the FAQ.
So if you can find where it corrects that, please post it. If not, all HQ choices in every necron armies are not IC. Bizarre eh?

The despairtek is the one with the flamer and him combo'd with the deathmarks is a good combo, but its a one hit wonder.
Best used with a NS flying them in because there is no risk of scattering when they deploy and you can always get the flamer template in the best spot.
Cryptek is pretty useless with deathmarks.
They join units in the list building stage.
They are from the royal court which he gets to take if he has an overlord. He can take i think 5 of the tek guys and split them up as acting sergeants for the squads he has.

You should re-check. I count 9 unit entries that are ICs.
The Royal Court are the only HQ non- ICs.

Could you tell me which book you are looking at? Mine says Infantry (character). I checked the 6th Ed rule book an it only specifies Infantry (character) as well.
A page reference would be helpfu. Thanks in advance.

Look under Special Rules. IC was never a Unit Type.

Well, let's see. The Cryptek does not have Deep Strike, so the unit cannot be placed in Deep Strike reserve. However, the Veil of Darkness can be used when arriving from reserve. So, they can be in regular reserve, and Deep Strike onto the table. IIRC, this will prevent them from arriving based on an enemy Deep Strike.

The deathmark...er, mark, only allows them to wound the specified target on a 2+. It does NOT give preffered enemy.
