I was just curious how many players, on Dakkadakka at least, still use the BT Codex over the SM Codex and if you don't mind, please share your reasons for why you do so. I know one player who still uses the BT Codex out of spite because to him the BT Codex was technically squatted and that he feels that the units in the current SM Codex don't truly represent the BT units.

Just like my Speed Freaks became Codex Orks, my Witchhunters became codex Adepta Sororitas and my Ulthwe Strike Force became Codex Eldar, so did my Black Templar become Codex Space Marines.

Codexes become obsolete all the time. I can find no justification to use Codex Black Templar anymore (however much I would like to).

Wait...is this actually legal? I mean technically there's no newer version of the BT codex, so that's ok. But wouldn't the rules in the Space Marine book supersede the older ones in the codex?

I mean I could grab my 3rd edition copy of Codex: Tau and start playing it because I don't believe in any fancy "Tau Empire"...

I'm sorry. I really don't want to be "that guy", but I just didn't think of this being a thing you could do (although if you get your opponent's permission you can do whatever the heck you both want. That's what's so great about this game).

The Black Templar codex is no longer legal, so neither I nor anyone I know use it.

'Legal' for what?

For tournaments, probably not unless you arrange it specifically with the TO. Tournament rules packages normally either list the books they allow or ask for the most recent available rules for a given army.

For anything else, it's entirely up to you and your opponent. There is no 'legal' setting on any of GW's books. A book doesn't suddenly become illegible just because a newer book has been released. Given that BTs were updated for use in 6th edition through the FAQ, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from continuing to use it if you so choose.

It's normally assumed that you should use the most recent rules for your army. It's not actually a rule, outside of tournaments or other organised play.

Assuming you were willing to tweak it enough to work within the current rules, yes, you could do this.

Ah, sorry for not writing clearly, let me clarify. For non-competitive games and, like you guys said, opponent(s) being okay with using the BT Codex do you use the older codex?

Use the old one, out of spite , and only until I get round to selling off my army, (also I don't want to buy a new book for an army I'm getting rid of). The army has been squatted to my mind (hence why I'm getting rid of them). What we are left with is a few unit options in csm.

I wouldn't mind the squatting if it had happened to all the sm variants, but it has not, and I would argue that ba and da could both have been represented in the same way that bt currently are, prior to the release of thier latest toys.
