I play WHFB mostly for fun, and was looking to add a squad of shades to my dark elf army, however I love the high elf shadow warrior models. Would it be believable for me to supplement the shadow warrior models as shades in my army? Could a group of shadow warriors defect to the dark elves, clad in dark purple hooded tunics? Would it be against any rules?

Certainly plausible. It wouldn't necessarily be in the nature of true Shadow Warriors to defect, however there are Dark Elf agents in all parts of Ulthuan and there would without doubt be camps of Dark Elves particularly in Nagarythe that despise their High Elven brethren.
Finding a way to substitute their bows for Repeater Crossbows, or even Handbows should be enough to satisfy any WYSIWYG issues your opponent could possibly have. Personally the rule of cool applies in this case. I have shadow warriors converted out of Wood Elf Glade Guard. Haven't had a single issue to date.

I can only encourage you to do so. I think it will add something unique to your army. For the same reason I use Manflayers as my shades. From looking at the sprue it seems that most of the torsos are armless so using spare arms from the corsair box would work perfectly for representing weaponry.

I would just use the Shadow Warrior models without this twist of background. Because noone in the Warhammer World hates Dark Elves more than Shadow Warriors. But as both originally come from the same army, similar looks are okay.

Go for it! It would look awesome with the proper paintjob and what not, that and I imagien in the broken realm of Nagantyre there would be ones that sympatize with Malakit even to this day.
