Hello everyone, I'll be attending my second tournament this weekend and the first truly competitive one (the first one allowed Escalation/Stronghold Assault and was a relaxed atmosphere).
I don't get to play much 40k as my local group is more focused on painting/modeling/converting, however I've got a good grasp of the basic rules and the last tournament event gave me a much better understanding of things like psychic powers and assaults.
The event itself is very cool sounding. You can create two lists, each at 1000 points. They must use the same codex/allies choices, so if you play main force of IG with DA allies in your attacker list, you must use main force IG with allied DA in your defensive list.
Additionally, the attacker always goes first in every game, no seize the initiative is allowed.
Attack lists are only allowed 0-1 heavy choices and no fortifications, defender lists are allowed 0-1 fast attack choices and 0-1 fortifications of either ADL or the Bastion (no fortress).
There will be 3 games throughout the day, with the focus being on capturing objectives. In one mission, the defender has a deployment area in a 12 inch diameter from the center of the board while the attacker can deploy 12 inches from either long board edge. In another scenario, the defender has 6 inches along one board edge and 3 objectives to defend, while the attacker deploys in a wedge where the apex is 24 inches at the center of the board, flaring back to the long board edge. Don't recall the last one.
As such, for my attack list I wanted to ensure good alpha strike ability. Thus, I've got a fully mechanized IG force sporting special weapons in every squad with DA's DW terminators led by Belial for unerring DS ability.
The idea is to DW assault with the terminators and use their TL dakka to shoot up the enemy on T1 while my chimaera's rush towards the enemy moving 18''. The next turn, my DW (if still alive) assault the shooty enemies while the vets in chimaera's dakka the enemy assault elements with high S and AP weapons. The Vendetta hopefully comes on and contributes to the devastation of enemy armor/high T units.
For defense, I wanted bodies with a small mobile force to attack any long ranged enemy attack elements (TFC, basilisk/manticore, broadsides). Vendetta is there to provide additional backfield strike ability as well as additional anti-air. I've also got a nice fireball PCS (x4 flamers) to mess up anyone that gets close to my lines.
These lists are supposed to be able to take all comers, and the guys at the store I play at play with all kinds of armies from the most cutting 'star' lists to more fluff/narrative type of lists like DW/RW or Death Company BA.
