I was wondering if any of the tau super heavy vehicles are worth their points or would you stay away from them and use normal units, or tell me you guys have had any success with them.

No.
Sadly, they are just terrible for the points.
I play a LOT of apoc, and have several super heavies of various armies (um...10 now? woah) and have played against even more.
Worse than vespid bad, or even pyrovore or whirlwind bad.
Now, having said that, I got a tigershark (the railgun version, the ion is even worse) recently, and am saving up for an orca.
The models are very cool, and in one game in about three they manage to at least do something.
Proxy them a few games and see.
I made cardboard versions of the tigersharks and orcas and played them for about six months before finally deciding to get them.

heh....
How about "worse than vespid, and almost as bad as a pyrovore?".
Seriously however, the models are just awesome...but they are really bad.

The one actual benefit Tau superheavies have is they have single shot S D railguns on flying models. Since most other S D weapons are blasts, they can't hit flyers.
The only one I ever considered was the Tigershark with twin-linked Railcannons. However it still seemed a bit too pricey points and dollar wise. That and I hear construction is a pain, with the flight stand being unable to support the weight at all.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Thats a good point. Anybody know what it would take to bring a manta down with non D weapons? Unless there are some non blast D weapons that can hit it.

TIGERSHARK
Yes, the tigershark with rail guns is the way to go, I even brought down a thunderhawk with it once.
However, even it is terribly over priced, and a single shot is just painful when you miss or roll badly.
the stand is crap, it does not even have a slot for it.
I am using a 1/2 acrylic rod for mine - will be starting the construction soon, and post some pics.
MANTA
Regarding the manta - its just too big to use and move.
BUT do not take my word for it, cut out a cardboard one and put it on the table....now move it around...see if you can get a base (maybe 12" diamater?) that can fit on the table.
Its a cool model, but I suspect (suspect, as have not played one yet) its not even remotely worth the points, unless you value it more for a transport.
What does it take to bring it down? Anything.
Wave serptents will rip it out of the sky, heck just about anything with S7 or so.
Why?
Because it has a special rule that it is so big, you don't need snap shots to shoot at it when its flying.
Sure, it will take a LOT to bring down....but in an apoc game, generating a lot of shots is not hard....
If you run into a few necron pylons (non blast D weapons) they will disintegrate it - you can buy four for the cost of the manta.

The Manta can be hit at full BS and with blasts, I think, because of its size, so its a non-issue.
Edit: Yeah, no need to take snap shots at it = blast can hit it, right?

Nope. Flyers are explicitly immune to blast (and similar) weapons, and this is in addition to their "snap shots only" rule. For example, if a Valkyrie armed with rocket pods (a blast weapon) chooses to have skyfire for the shooting phase it will fire its multilaser/lascannon at full BS at an enemy flyer, but the rocket pods still won't be able to hit the flyer even though they aren't forced to fire as snap shots.
In the case of the Manta the special rule only says "you don't have to fire snap shots", it doesn't remove any of the other special rules flyers have. So all you get is an increase in BS when shooting at it, you don't get to shoot at it with any additional types of weapons.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

They are horribly overcosted, every one of them.
With the exceptiong of the orca, who would have been fair if it did not count as a LoW. 300 points for a huge transport is ok-ish. (it can take over 50 models)

I own a manta and a tiger shark. Before even playing with the tiger shark I converted it to the rail gun version. It vaporized a Land Raider Terminus, then my opponent turned two storm raves on it. Two twin linked lasscannons and it was done. The D weapons nice, but you have to baby sit it or it drops out of the sky.
The manta is not worth the points for what you get. (looking at stats compaired to points, still trying to build my manta). You get much better fire power and survivability from a regular tau army. So the mantas terrible for regular play, would take for story games only.
Havent tried an orca.

This.
Yeah, the only way my tigershark survives is when I saturate the sky with flyers and the other players have poor target priority.
My orca gets shot out of the sky usually 2/3 of the games....but I love the model and its fun when I can actually land it and unload 50 fire warriors behind enemy lines.
The Manta...its cool, but too big and too many points. I would rather run 16 barracudas (no, I don't have that many, but you get the idea).

Orcas are really good. They are cheap and can transport lots of models. You can even transport broadsides in them (counting as 5 models each as per extremely bulky). They are great in big apoc floor games when it can take 12 turns to footslog your guys across the board
