I can score 20 Orc Boyz for $15 as opposed to $58, but they are out of print. Are these models still legal?

Probably only a GW store or tournament would care about that. But even then, sure. I recall Jervis Johnson once saying something about suggesting that people use their odl Squat models as IG, even.

Yes. It has always been the case that OOP Citadel miniatures are still legal Citadel miniatures.
You may come across people who don't recognise them for what they are. I have 40K figures over 25 years old. They are older than a lot of young players.

Same here, some of my Eldar go wayyyyyyy back. The scatter laser on my dreadnought looks like the exhaust off an Ork contraption!
I think they're one of the better looking older ranges though. They look quite dynamic even in mono-pose.
But for every awesome Dire Avenger you have an Eldar Jet Bike

Official GW mdels, even if oop or outdated, are always legal. In some instances, there was a remodelling, or a base change (from 25 to 40, from 40 to 60... even models that did not have a base). And for these models, it's polite rebasing, but technicaly it is not necessary (well, if it had no bas, it's better basing anyways, the model gains in stability).
Old models give also variety to an army. A friend of mine has in his army even RT models - the real old armour marks, as he calls them.
Again to conclude: yes, GW/Citadel models are always legal representing themselvs if there are rules for them... Or "counting as", if the rules,as the models, are discontinued (as in the above squats' example)

I've got models in my IG army going back to 1988.
Eldar models going back to 1987.
SM models going back to 1987.
But I don't play in a store and GW don't run events around here, so there's little resistance to older models.

Half of the fun of collecting citadel minis is getting your hands on some of the older ones.
for instence I recently got a rogue trader ork nob on warbike off a friend.
I dont plan on using him as he itty bitty compaired to current models.
Bit any time I brought in some of my older minis to my then local g.w. (its closed now) the staff and players at the store in general thought they were very cool.

You'll get some complaints if an opponent suspects you use old models for the (generally) smaller profile, but they're certainly Citadel models.

One of our guys around here has hordes of oldschool terminators and it's really annoying as a newer player. Took me playing against him twice before I got to the point I'd just ask which ones were terminators and which ones were regular marines because they're hard to tell apart on those tiny little bases.

You saying you can’t tell these:
from these?
Kids these days, no respect for your elders.
To the OP: Yes, it’s OK. I routinely field minis older then my opponents. RTB01 beakies driven around in their tiny rhino, and small based terminators. Nothing but compliments.

I think the main point to take away from this thread is; Yes you can use old GW models in a modern GW gamesystem, as long as it is clear to your opponent what that model is and what its equipped with.
I'm still confused when playing games against the newest Tau and Necrons about which unit is which.
The only point where there could be an issue would be with basing, models should be on the correct size base. Which is a pain for old Termies and Bikers! But then its a good excuse to get onto ebay and buy some cool resin bases and make your models shine!

There has been a significant change in style since the old days. Plus advances in miniatures technology. I will grant you that the newer stuff does look much better. Also keep in mind that those old guys are from my personal collection, with my mediocre table-top quality paint job. And some of them aren’t even my modern, I’ve been painting for 25+ years paintjob, (not that that’s much better) They’ve been proudly wearing the same colors since 2-3rd edition. Other people can make those same, old minis look much better.

I'm sure he really enjoyed those games. The model design over the years is essentially the same except for different bases!

They're still GW models, regardless of their age. My Valhallans and Crimson Fists are primarily made of OOP models, and my Ultramarines are strictly models made in 2nd edition. If someone tells me I'm not allowed to play with the models that I bought and painted like so:
They can shove it, because they're not someone worth playing against.

When the bases changed I kept mine on the original bases, put some magnets on them and attached them to the larger bases for gaming. The integrity of the old minis are maintained, but they now avoid difficulties with other players. Plus they are taller and in line with the height of the new minis. Everyone's happy.

I can't. If the storm bolters and lack of backpacks aren't enough of a giveaway, the fact that the old terminators are essentially exactly the same design as the current ones, just slightly smaller, should be enough.
That, and there is still a significant size and bulk difference between power armoured marines and a terminator, even with the old models. Automatically Appended Next Post:
That's not an issue at all. The rules just assume that models are on the base with which they were supplied. There is no need to rebase a model just because a newer version has a different base.
Which is good, because otherwise Eldar Jetbike users would be totally confused by this point, as they would have been constantly swapping between the two current flight base sizes since 3rd edition...
