Hey guys
Quick question... Does The 4++ save given by Ion shields (assuming on the correct facing) Work with over watch?
RAW: "Ion Shield may not be used to make saving throws against close combat attacks." (PG 24&26, White Dwarf Weekly issue 4)
So does Overwatch count as a close combat or a shooting attack?

overwatch is not a close combat attack, its an out of sequence shooting attack made during your opponents turn.
if you get to use the shield or not however will hopefully be answered in the codex.

I think the shield says "shooting phase" meaning another of those ridiculous conflicts "is over-watch the shooting phase".

It doesn't.
It simply doesn't allow saves from close combat attacks.
Overwatch is in no way a close combat attack, so it works perfectly fine.

Oh, it doesn't? Well that's good news.

There is no rules conflict here, so I'm not sure why this is a question.
Per the WD leak, you choose a facing for an Ion shield at the start of the opponent's shooting phases, and you keep that same facing until the start of the opponent's next shooting phase.
Overwatch is shooting, there is no question about that if you read the rules.
So where is the confusion?

I have that particular WD, and it's exactly as you say. They get to choose the shield facing on the opponents shooting phase, and it stays on that side until the opponents next turn. This does leave the shield down during the movement phase, however, so vector strikes will not give the knight an invul save if he chose side armor the previous shooting phase.

No, check again. It says that it stays at that facing until the start of the opponent's next SHOOTING PHASE, so there is no gap in coverage.

I'm 100% with yakface.
In the opponent's shooting phase you pick the facing that gets the save. By the time a knight could possibly perform an assault that facing has already been chosen and the result sticks until the opponents NEXT shooting phase. At which time you pick again.
Makes it kind of important to remember to declare a facing during your opponents shooting phase even if the knight hasn't been shot at. It also means that tactically your opponents will want to force you to pick a facing that may not be in your best interest depending on what you will assault.

Think of overwatch and interceptor as interrupting shooting attacks rather than as anything contextual to the turn they take place in.
