Somewhere in south-central England.

Take a bunch of purple sprouting broccoli and blanch it. Remove before fully cooked through.

In a saute pan, put a couple of Tbsp of olive oil and two thinly sliced cloves of garlic. Lightly fry the garlic and don't let it brown.

Add a tsp of chopped chilli, 100 ml of water and 60g of anchovy fillets (or paste). Mash the anchovy with a fork and fry the mixture until it starts to reduce.

Put the blanched broccoli back and fry and toss the mixture until the broccoli is coated with the sauce.

Meanwhile, toast some Italian bread (ciabatta, foccacia, etc.) and rub it with raw garlic.

Put the broccoli on the toast and drizzle a little olive oil. Finish with lemon juice.

Yum!

Yeah, but you can be thin but still your diet is full of bad food that will have horrible health impacts down the road if you don't keep things under control.

Delicious suggestion: get a bunch of small, baby Brussels sprouts and a single leek. Cut them in half, and cut the leeks however you want. I make rings with them. Marinade them with a few minced cloves of garlic and balsamic vinegar, then either bake them in the oven or grill them (use tin foil to keep them in the vinegar). Cook thoroughly, but don't make them mushy. Consume the deliciousness you've made.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Keep portion size reasonable. Eat more fruits and vegetables, and if you eat bread go whole grain. Cut down on red meat and eat more fish and chicken and that sort of thing. Eat fewer carbohydrates if you don't exercise a lot (but don't cut them out completely).

I like to make salads with spinach and other greens, carrots, green peppers, etc. with some chicken or fish and cheese and nuts as a meal.


Frozen blueberries are great, as is Greek yogurt. You can eat a good variety of delicious things as long as you don't go overboard. And it's okay to eat things like desserts and other less healthy things from time to time, as long as you do it as a treat and not an every day sort of thing.

You don't need to eat 5 portions a day, after all exactly what is a portion? Its another public information soundbyte designed to change peoples behaviour but which isn't really all that meaningful.

All you need to do is eat a varied 'real' diet and you will be covered for everything (except vitamin D and all you need to do for that is go outside). If we really needed suppliments that would mean that human evolution has failed. Its your money though.

Combine these in a blender. You need to eat it right away though as once the fruit defrosts it goes watery.

Well, I need to consume a lot of protein, so it can be difficult to eat as much veg as I need to stay healthy. That's where the green supplement comes in.

But hey, I'm not a nutritionist and I'm pretty sure you aren't either, so we're pretty much spinning our wheels here.

I'm not a nutritionist but its not a field that I am completely ignorant of.

If you have a specific medical issue that requires suppliments then thats a different story. If not, well at least you are contributing to the economic recovery.

Me either. I lift, so my nutritional needs are slightly different to people who don't. It requires a fair bit of research. My point was that a green supplement is a decent way to add extra nutrients to your diet, which it is. Your point was that to eat healthier, you should eat healthier. Excellent advice. Almost entirely useless though, considering Cheesecat was looking for specific guidance and yours was about as non-specific as it gets.

If you have a specific medical issue that requires suppliments then thats a different story. If not, well at least you are contributing to the economic recovery.

I eat vegetables, it's just that because with so much focus is on your macros, it's easy to make up any potential micro shortfall with the green powdered stuff. It's not particularly outlandish, lots of people who lift do it, and I wouldn't even consider myself a really serious lifter.

Anyway, I give one piece of offhand advice (that you could find on plenty of fitness/bodybuilding sites or publications) and all of sudden this thread is about me justifying my nutritional choices? I mean, jog on. What's it to you, exactly?

Best brussel sprouts recipe I know is to take the sprouts, halve them and lay them face down in a skillet with a little bit of olive oil and let them brown a bit with the lid on so they steam, giving them a turn every now and again.

Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl large enough to hold all the sprouts, whisk about a teaspoon of dijon mustard together with a lemon's worth of zest and juice and salt and pepper to taste.

When the sprouts are good and done (they'll be a bright green color with some caramelization here and there, maybe six minutes?), transfer them to the bowl and toss to coat them with the dressing. Serve hot

The healthiest thing I eat is cabbage soup, just garlic, cabbage and stock, tastes a bit like dishwater but i feel really good after eating it. Also a good hangover cure is spinach and broccoli soup, no idea why but it works for me.

That's not really healthy. Honestly, if you just want to eat healthier it is as simple as cutting out processed foods and empty calories. Focus on micronutrient content. Unless you're leaning out for an actual physique contest or photoshoot, tracking macronutrients is a self masturbatory obsession.

Healthy food that tastes good? Easy. Use a good oil, rice or canola, when pan frying, cook everything from scratch, and buy good quality ingredients. Good quality basics is the start of tasting good and cooking your own food from scratch will cut out allot of fat, sugar and salt crammed in to processed food (Including things like bacon and sausages).

Secondary to that (Things to keep in mind rather than be too strict on), ensure your plate is 2:1:1. 2 parts veg, one part carbs, one part protein. Eat more fresh fish and less red meat. Have some meat free meals. If you buy good quality then this won't be a problem.

For example, oily fish is very good for you. Get a mackerel, put a few bay leave inside it, salt, pepper, and bake until done (This won't take long).

Try replacing beef with mushrooms. For example, make a stew but only use half the beef, or when you have a steak get half the amount and buy some really good mushrooms, like some chanterelle or blewit's, and fry them in butter with a little rosemary or thyme.

As for cutting out things like gluten, or taking supplements, at best a waste of money, at worst damaging to your health unless you do it for a good reason. For example, my wife takes a multivitamin and calcium every day, because she is on a very restricted diet due to health issues (And under the guidance of a dietitian). I don't eat gluten or lactose as I have IBS, but have only done so under the guidance of a doctor.
