Hi, im new to the forums and new to warhammer 40k. I recently just acquired the "dark vengeance" starter set to get me into this hobby. Im trying to paint everything the basic colors there supposed to be without really customizing much. I understand the difference between chaos space marines and regular space marines but the one thing thats really stumping me is this guide " http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Pictorial_List_of_Space_Marine_Chapters_A-L#.UxPNTijA78F " Is it usually frowned upon if I decided to mix different chapters showed in this guide so I dont have to stick to the same color scheme?

The kit came with "crimson slaughter" and includes Kranon the Relentless, Chaos Lord, Mortis Metalikus: Helbrute, and Draznicht's Ravagers: Chosen. Also included are Chaos Cultists made up of Sect Anarkus, and Sect Tetchvar.

Technically I would like to use the crimson slaughter color scheme on kranon, chaos lord. and was hoping to do the rest with a black templar color scheme, with hell brute being a mix of both. Is it common to do something like this or should I just stick with the Crimson slaughter color scheme and apply that to all of my next purchases to expand my army?

Thanks for the help in advance, and comments or advice are highly appreciated especially since im still a noob

Just realized that theres different war band symbols, do armies in entirety usually stick with 1 war band symbol or is it common to have multiple war band symbols in an army?

It's chaos dude, pretty much anything goes. Personally I'd stick to one colour scheme per squad, mainly so it's easy to identify which mini belongs to which squad. Other than that its mainly down to the rule of cool.
If it looks cool then it's right.
Looking forward to seeing some of your work.

It's really up to you.

Most people paint their army in one specific color scheme, but certain models can sometimes be totally different from the rest (like Librarians and Apothecaries).

Note that Black Templars are not Chaos Marines. You can still use the same colors if you want, though.

As for warband symbols; if you're doing a warband, it makes most sense for all of them to be using the same symbol, imo.

Appreciate the fast reply, would every model I mentioned above be considered 1 squad?

Yeah, they are loyal to the Imperium of Man, not the gods of Chaos.

Typically one color scheme is chosen as it shows the army is together, you can still choose to make squads different but it will look like a quilt pattern once on the table.

I just got that kit and started too, You know you can make up your own scheme right? I did that. But if you are new I wonder recommend NOT doing black and white. It is one of the hardest paint schemes to make look good.
