I’ve been trying to learn about the topic and spent some time looking for available domains with good values per Estibot, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success stories or words of warning.

Right now I was thinking about picking up a few of the domains and parking them and then trying to flip them later on if they weren’t generating any income.

This is totally new territory for me, so I’m open to any guidance or being told I’m an idiot!

If you are doing that, try political ones. They are often updated every year (soandos2012.com, soandso2014.com, ect.). Also look at local businesses who don't have a website but might get one.

Try videogames. A lot of companies will buy up potential domains early (Bethesday bopught eldersrollsonline.com a loooooong time ago, years before the game was even in the planning stages). Take a look at upcoming games and taking pot shots at sequel titles could end up very profitable or a very big waste of time. Some people jsut stumble into them (like the guy who had the WiiU domain name).

EDIT: YOu'll also need to be creative. For example you could own biowareinfinity.com, but if you don't also own bioware-infinity.com you could miss out.

Also, look at people like youtubers who don't have sites, they generally make one eventually.

Not a great idea as most YouTuber's are not Total Buscuit and have little money. They can't pay much and probably won't bother anyway (TB has never even tried to buy the Total Biscuit user name even though its been offered to him by the owner).

I also feel its kind of douchey to target people like that. A company is a faceless mass with assets. The typical youtuber is a person trying to get by.

Probably work

I think that there's a special place in hell for those who park domain names.

True, but he is trying to make money. I personally don't like that but its one way to make money. Personally I prefer making webpages for money.

I like doing productive things to make money (like a job), rather than speculating on other people doing productive things and camping their domain names to make money.

It's really not any different from buying land with the expectation that sooner or later someone will want to build their condo complex/fancy resort town/stadium/whatever on it. It takes on a bit more of a personal flare cause doman main names have names, obviously, but in principle is basically the same practice.

Insert "Land Speculation" where I said "Domain Speculation" for my thoughts on that subject.

Again, to each their own.

It's in the fourth circle, next to SCO.

Good question, even Wikipedia doesn't know.

They're a legendary pioneer in the then-nascent field of patent trolling. They claimed that Linux infringed on their Unix IP and everyone who installed Linux owned them money, and then started suing everyone, everywhere. Unfortunately Microsoft paid them early on for a license, which obviously intensified their tomfoolery. They were substantially less successful everywhere else.

They did eventually go bankrupt, so I'd say they got what they deserved - but what they really deserved was to be hit in the face over and over again with a rubber hose, and as far as I am aware, that didn't happen, except for one executive with a very specific fetish, and he paid good money for it, so it doesn't count, and besides - no judgements - this is a safe place.

To be fair, I always thought that with a name like Santa Cruz Operation, they were trying a little too hard to sounds like an organized crime front.
