I was wondering if anyone had any experience running a Necron Destroyer Lord in a unit of Canoptek Scarabs? I know they're mixed type, but would they still be able to move 12" (as Jump Infantry and a Swarm?)

I am curious as to how the Scarabs would work as cheap ablative wounds, and if the Preferred Enemy (Everything!) they received would be valuable as their WS is soooo low?

In practice, how do Scarabs do what they do with their Entropic strikes? Does every hit on a vehicle just strip armor permanently, meaning that ten-twelve hits, utterly destroy most tanks/transports?

Entropic Strike rules are pretty clear in the Necron codex. For each hit against a vehicle, you roll to see if armor value is stripped prior to rolling for a penetrating hit. It's not an auto-deduction ability.

As for having a d-lord escort a pack of scarabs - there's usually better places to put the d-lord as Scarabs have enough wounds to handle themselves against pretty much anything that is not S6 or higher (and doesn't play into the weaknesses of a Swarm special rule). If you find yourself against Eldar, it's not a bad setup; however, there's usually better options even then.

Thanks Unholyllama. I checked the Codex and must've been having a brain-fart as I was confusing the "any unit wounded, loses its armor" with the specific vehicle rules. They do seem like a good unit though.

As for pairing a D.Lord with them, I was only considering it because I don't own any Wraiths yet, which seem like a more obvious choice for a retinue for him.

OK

Putting the D-Lord up front to tank wounds would be interesting, because scarabs just get insta-killed way too easily.

Personal opinion? The Destroyer Lord doesn't need the Scarabs to suck up wounds for him. He's better off in a number of other places. And the Scarabs DEFINITELY don't need his help to take down vehicles. Even against a Land Raider, Scarabs can chew through that vehicle and on out the other side like it's nothing. When it comes to anti-vehicle capacity, Scarabs are one of the nastiest units in the game.

I agree with Jimsolo. Scarabs are fine on their own. If you want to risk a Dlord, you can put him up front for the +2 save, but weight of fire and majority T3 will take him down pretty fast.

Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

Honestly if you have the wraiths (but you said you did not) go for them, they can handle tanks just fine with a dlord and are more versatile vs all targets

I think this bring about the best point as to why you DON'T want to put a destroyer lord with scarabs. Majority toughness 3 means you're taking a T-6 model and weakening him significantly to the point where he could be instant kills with a sneeze just about.

You're right in your conclusion, but he would still be T6 for Instant Death purposes.

Majority toughness just means the unit gets wounded as t 3. It doesn't drop the d lords toughness to 3 so he still can't be instant killed, but that's still not a great reason to put him out front.
