So in the last month I've gotten back into warhammer, both 40k and FB. My choice of progression is slow and steady, buying a box or two at a time to make the hobby slow and time consuming while avoiding dropping too much per purchase. I decided to start up and ol' favorite of mine and start Tau for 40k. I have a cadre fireblade and a squad of firewarriors which are almost all painted up.

After building a mobile gaming table for myself and my friends I want to get into my preferred game of WHFB! The two* most attractive armies to me are lizardmen and dwarves, but for each separate reasons. I like an army that I can construct a story behind, give a name to my captain, and watch him kill and be killed. I want lists that have a variety of options and fun. I just love War Machines and units that make the battlefield more fun. But I also like an army that can move and get into combat as well as some shooting. And to top it all off, magic is a blast in fantasy! I want to take the best of these two armies and throw em together! The lack of shooting for lizardmen is a bit disappointing and dwarven mobility is well...slow.

My logical conclusion was to try out empire! I get the middle ground between all of these! I have organized infantry, customization with my lords and heroes, shooting, good combat units, decent magic, and fast moving cavalry! I'm thinking a captain to start out and a box of halberds. Any ideas where to expand past that? Maybe a some swordsmen and a cannon, then a mage?

Cheers!

Well, that was an unexpected turn!

Empire are a great middle man! Jack of all trades I think.

I'd go with some halberdiers, a nice big block of em, supported by a cannon and some crossbowmen or handgunners depending on your choice. And a mage is a solid bet too!

Like most books in fantasy, IMHO, it's pretty well balanced with itself and the meta in general, so just collect what you think is cool and go with it!

One of my favourite things was a warrior priest buffing my unit of halberdiers using a few dice left over from my Mage's magic.

Have fun!

Also, portable table? What do you use for that, as that sounds genius!

I know, right? I didn't see it coming. I was expecting "which of the two should I pick?"

That's what I am, a jack of all trades but a master of none!

I think I'm getting a box of halberdiers and a warrior priest first! Handgunners/ crossbowmen, swordsmen, mage, and cannon 2nd! Then go out from there!

Heres a quick vidya of the table I made. I just need to put a carrying handle/straps on it.

I really like Pizza, but then I really like Pasta Carbonara. The latter is probably healthier, but Pizza's nicer and I can choose my toppings.

I think I'll have a steak.

That's pretty much what you just said.

Well, Empire are a great beginners army, as has been mentioned, and the good thing is you can pretty much go anywhere. What do you want to try out first? Combat? Shooting? Mobility MSU? Pick your purchases accordingly. I'm no huge expert on the book, but I think most Empire units are equally balanced. There are few units that are just vastly inferior to the others.
