Just saw this hit my inbox. It's interesting about how they hire from the letter, not the CV.

Warhammer World Visitors' Centre Manager

Location: Nottingham, United Kingdom
Salary: Competitive
Closing date: 09 Mar 2014

About the Job

Warhammer World is Games Workshop's dedicated visitors' centre, showcasing the glory of Citadel Miniatures and the worlds of Warhammer. 100,000 people from all over the world visit every year to take part in events, buy their favourite miniatures and have a relaxing beverage in the world's only Dwarven drinking hall - the famous Bugman's Bar!

We have big plans for making Warhammer World even more exciting, with new displays, events and retail stores. Are you excited by the challenge of running this world class visitors' centre?!

Your job will be to attract more people to Warhammer World, give them an experience they will never forget and drive the commercial success of the whole enterprise. Make no mistake, our existing visitors' centre is already a multi-million pound business and with the substantial investments we have planned we are looking for someone to drive very significant increases in the number of visitors and the amount they spend.

You will be responsible for the teams that organise and run events in the exhibition hall, that create the wonderful displays of miniatures, the staff that serve in Bugman's and the retail stores - everything needed for the smooth running of the facility to ensure that the customers' experience is always exceptional. You will also be responsible for devising and managing a programme of events at external venues. You will need to build strong relationships and work closely with many different parts of Games Workshop as well as with external parties.

What makes this job hard? You will be managing a team to deliver a first class experience for every single Warhammer World visitor, making sure that you are always meeting your ambitious commercial expectations and at the same time driving plans to improve the customer experience for the future. That's a huge challenge, and only someone with bags of passion, energy and vision is going to be anywhere near up to that challenge.

Working at Games Workshop

At Games Workshop we are looking for people who will do their best to understand the needs of the company and to put those needs first when they are at work. Because of this we believe that what you are like, hence the attitude you show to work and the way you choose to behave is even more important than your skills or experience.

Other Essential Information

Experience: This is a senior job, requiring you to run a significant business unit. At Games Workshop we don't ask for specific experience or qualifcations, but we do require a credible application letter that outlines real examples of creating and putting into action successful business plans that relate to a business of this stature.

Queries: If you require any further information regarding salary and other details, these are available by emailing Personnel at anne.clarke@gwplc.com.

How to Apply

If you wish to apply you must send us a letter telling us why you want this job. We select candidates for interview on the content of their letters. This is a great opportunity for you to let us know that you understand what we are looking for.

No letter, no interview.

It may also help to include an up-to-date CV.

When you have gathered this information, you can click here to apply on or before Sunday 9th March 2014.

It makes a certain amount of sense to focus on the letter bearing in mind how much BS there usually is in CVs.

The letter being what should be a bespoke document for that particular job should give an insight into the applicant that a list of previous employments might not have. Allot of interviewers chose on the basis of people that they can see themselves being friends with (Do I want to work with this girl/guy?) so the application.

A covering letter is normal for most jobs. Certainly every job I have applied for has wanted a covering letter or personal statement and I ask for them when employing staff. They get to tell you about what they bring to the job and you get to read their take on what they can bring. So much more useful than a dry CV which is just a list of facts. With soft skills you need to know why a skill is applicable outside of the obvious.

it certainly shows a different mentality to what I'm used to within my own industry/experience. I really don't have the time to read six dozen letters from people without the relevant experience and a CV lets me do a very quick 1st run through candidates.

But horses for courses I suppose

Is it just that the hiring practices in the UK are more, not sure what word to use here, but more "stringent" than the USA?

When I was hired by GW in Baltimore I just turned in my Resume, called back a couple times and got an interview 3 days later and was hired at the end of the interview. I didn't even have a cover letter for my resume at the time.

A few people I know now are looking to go to work for GW in the UK and from what I've heard from them it could take months just for them to get an interview. They might give up or find another job by that time.

In an earlier post I mentioned two of my friends are looking to work for GW in the studio as well, but I think they might give up and try somewhere else due to how difficult it seems GW makes it.

Some of the guys I know at Privateer Press in their studio said it was really easy, they just submitted their portfolio and resume, had an interview and that was it. A couple were approached by Privateer to come to work for them. Does GW ever even do that? "Cold Call" sculptors to see if they want to come to work for them?

Is this common in the UK or is it just a "GW thing", making something overly complicated?

Hell, our hiring practices at Microsoft are pretty easy in comparison.

Somewhere in south-central England.

It varies a lot by company and by the person doing the direct selection.

Two interviews is fairly common for a job at any more senior level.

I had three interviews when I joined Sony, but there were two very close candidates they found it hard to choose between.

When I recruited people I always called on other staff to help with the selection, particularly the people who were going to be workmates. We reviewed CVs and covering letters and always did an interview and did a functional test for programmers or looked at the portfolio for artists.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The letters are to get you into the door, then you go through the hoop jumping.

Reading between the lines, it says what we already know. GW is a gak company to work for, and you shouldn't expect much from them in terms of loyalty, because you will be a replaceable cog if you do not spout the party line and drink the kool aid.

To get the numbers, you use the letter, then you use the interviews, and selection process to weed outt he chaff, then you put them under fire to see who you really want in the position.

Generate the interest, then get them into the door. hmmm......

Wonder if it really works or not for other processes as well, such as selling models?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

You have no idea, how common this is period. I work for a major appliance company and they make it nearly impossible to apply for a quality control position. It takes months for them to tell you they don't want you for a certain position.

The letter idea is a shrewd way to hire people for a customer-centric company like Games Workshop. Whatever our complaints about the game and such, even the most ebon-armoured Black Knight will readily concede that their CS is world class so clearly their techniques work well.

It's exact opposite in IT. The recruiters I've worked with said the preferred CV has a table on top with the systems you know, like SAP, Javascript, PHP, etc, and then put all the derp under that, that way they can find what they need immediately.

I just came here thinking the title was 'GW hiring Mechs' and was thinking A: Mechs and B: There is my job

But alas, it appears my awsome Battletech and Mechwarrior skills will as yet go unused

Free from GW's tyranny and the hobby is looking better for it
