So after perusing the various 40k Facebook groups again, I notice that there's some sort of administratia army getting released soon? Am I the only one who thinks that this is all starting to get a bit too much?

Recently we have had several new releases: Imperial Knights, stronghold, escalation, legion of the damned, inquisition codex, and various other dataslates as well. It really puts me off looking into investing in new armies (and I say that as a player who builds armies for fluff mostly). I think the straw that broke the camels back for me was the knights codex. You need to pay like 80 quid to have one (6 in a full arny if I recall correctly) but to use it you also need to buy escalation/apocalypse on top of it? Seems like a money grab to me.

Then there's the whole "forge world inclusion" that GW announced recently. While I understand that most independent tournies will likely house rule everything until they have a ruleset that suits them, to me this just blows the door too wide open. When I build a list, I like to try and have a theme, but also try to anticipate what other lists I may face so that I don't deliberately handicap myself against a particular opponent. With all of this new forge world stuff, and all the dataslates being introduced, it feels like I'm going to be spending at least half an hour prior to games reading all the relevant rules and stuff - which I'm likely to forget as the game goes on.

I think all the new models are really cool, but for me 40k is starting to become a bit of a mess. Am I alone in this rant?

To use knigths you do not! Need apocalypse or escalation.
A) they are not lords of war b) they are their own codex and GW said theirself in the white dwarf and mentiond in the codex that their ment for "all" kind of game types.

The imperialguard deal seems to be a makeover rather than a supplement someing like all humanity(none gene improvement*cough*) into one book.

Since gw started going digital allot more releases have come and people have gotten what they demanded several times but is it ever enough?

no! We are collectors, painters, gamers and generallly fans of the 40k grim dark genre.

As for their buisness they try to cope up as their econemy goes up and down down down up down down they panic and do stuff like this and dont admitt theres other stuff that can be done
So yes since 2009 the game have become slightly a mess as GW no longer gives a damn about playtesting fluff checking or faqs.

I mean don't get me wrong, im not 100% adverse to new content, but shouldn't they have waited to redo all the core armies before this plethora of supplements and dataslates?

Don't you need apoc/escalation to get the rules for D and super heavy walkers?

You would think so, but no, apparently that's not what we want.

No, they're in the Knight codex.

Those few rules you can acces trough the digtial codex of the knigths not sure about the hardbook but i think they are there too.

Then again remeber... Supplements aint the same guys that make the codexes GW have a digtital edd group that makes these supplements and release them first digital and then about a month or some times earlier it goes on hardbook.

The problem isn't the amount of stuff, it's that:

1) GW doesn't have enough competent game designers to make good new releases on a schedule like this. We're getting garbage rules that obviously haven't been playtested sufficiently between someone thinking "hey, this would be cool" and putting another $50 book on the shelf. And, worse, we're starting to see GW stretch a given amount of content into as many new releases as possible with the goal of maximizing the number of $50 books they can sell you.

2) There's no limit on how many things you can have in a single army. You can have a primary detachment taken from a supplement that references a parent codex, 3-4 single units each from their own "codex", a fortification from the fortifications book, a superheavy from Escalation, an allied detachment, and a special formation or two. It's completely demolishing the idea that your codex is your army and replacing it with a system where each separate unit has its own $50 book to keep track of. It was kind of annoying when it was just FW units that had separate rulebooks, but now everything is like that.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I think your second point probably more accurately describes how I'm feeling. Armies were beginning to lose identity with the introduction of allies, but it's gone way past that now.

Blame the people who buy single-unit books for $50. GW wouldn't make them if it wasn't cost effective.

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

Options are a good thing. I can see the "too much of a good thing" criticism, as it's awful hard to keep up with, but it's keeping the game interesting and alive so I don't mind. As for that "administratum" army you saw on Facebook, that's a little supplement so you can run what are essentially Stormtroopers and their transport in other armies aside from the new IG codex, which has been renamed Astra Millitarum. So there's not really much new coming out right now to cause confusion.

Ok I have to say it OPTIONS are not always a good thing. The reason for rules and restraints in a game is to keep thing fun and balanced. Yes I know GW can care less about balance, but by allowing all this extra crap they have killed any hope of balance or sanity. I was talking to a player just the other day about his list where he plans to bring a unit of centurions in the new 2 Lascannon building with a librarian to give them ignore cover and void shields just for the icing on that cake. Then there anouther buddy of mine that was complaining about a local Tau player bringing 6 Riptides to a game. Once apon a time GW would put 0-1, or 0-2 restrictions on crazy powerful units. Now with all the OPTIONS it Is a take as you please game so players do. It leaves the game in a state of who can make the most crazy powerful army possible to deal with the other guys crazy powerful stuff.

Solution: Don't play against those people. It's not hard. If a dude shows up and has something stupid like a 6 Riptide list, I'm gonna save myself the time and just say "nah man, you can have this one" and go find someone else to play. It's a social contract, you don't HAVE to play every guy who throws down a spammy army list. If you're in really competitive tournaments that's obviously more of a problem, but that's not my scene so I couldn't really tell you what to do about it aside from dinging your opponent on comp or sportsmanship.
