soooo... need some help,

shortly i will have 6 dreads 4 regular 2 with lc 1 with hf 1 with ac i also have one DA venerable dread with plasma cannon and 1 contemptor with plasma cannon.

i want to give them a name and name each individually as well but i am starting to run out of names, i know DA traditionally are hebre names but i am willing to give them anything that at least sounds right. the contemptor will be the top dog with the venerable in second. eventually i will be adding to the detachment but for now i would like to get the basicas and background set up so if anyone fancies making up some fluff about these guys then go for it. basically this will be a page to develop ideas.

I want the contemptor to be a serious hero doesnt have to be a captain or anything like that. he doesnt even have to be from the DA he can be from a successor and have been given the honour of fighting in the deathwing i just want a half decent story behind him. need to justify why there is a 10k year old contemptor roaming about (he doesnt have to be that old)

so yeah any suggestions fire away

http://20000-names.com/ is a very useful website.

Here's a cross section, though. Hebrew names for DAngel Dreads...

ABDOWN (עַבְדּוֹן): Hebrew name meaning "servant, worshiper." In the bible, this is the name of several characters, including one of the judges who ruled over Israel. Also spelled Avdon.
ABE: Short form of Hebrew Abraham, meaning "father of a multitude," and other names beginning with Ab-.
ABEY: Variant spelling of Hebrew Abie, meaning "father of a multitude."
ABI: Pet form of Hebrew Abraham, meaning "father of a multitude." Also spelled Avi. Compare with feminine Abi.
ABICHAIL (אֲבִיחַיִל): Variant spelling of Hebrew unisex Abiyhayil, meaning "father of might."
ABIE: Pet form of Hebrew Abe, meaning "father of a multitude."
ABIHAYIL (אֲבִיחַיִל): Variant spelling of Hebrew unisex Abiyhayil, meaning "father of might."
ABIYAH (אֲבִיָּה): Hebrew unisex name meaning "Yahweh is my father." In the bible, this is the name of a son of Samuel, the mother of Hezekiah, a member of the tribe of Benjamin, a king of Judah, and several other characters. Also spelled Aviyah.
ABIYDA (אֲבִידַע): Hebrew name meaning "father of knowledge." In the bible, this is the name of one of Midian's five sons.

My word, Hebrew likes A-names!

BENZECRY: Hebrew patronymic name meaning "son of Zechariah."
BETHUW'EL (בְּתוּאֵל): Hebrew name meaning "God destroys" or "man of God." In the bible, this is the name of a town and also the name of the father of Rebecca.
BETSALEL (בְּצַלְאֵל): Hebrew name meaning "in the shadow." In the bible, this is the name of a son of Uri who was one of the architects of the tabernacle, and the name of an Israelite.
BIGVAY (בִּגְוַי): Hebrew name meaning "gardener, husbandman" or "in my bodies." In the bible, this is the name of a man who was a leader amongst the Babylonian exile returnees.
BILHAN (בִּלְהָן): Hebrew name meaning "modest." In the bible, this is the name of a Benjamite.
BINYAMIN (בִּנְיָמִין): Hebrew name meaning "son of the right hand." In the bible, this is the name of several characters, including one of the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel, the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons. His original name was Benoni, given to him by his mother who died giving birth to him. Not wanting his son to bear such an ill-omened name, Jacob changed it to Binyamin (Benjamin), a more fortunate name.

CHAGGIY (חַגִּי): Hebrew name meaning "festive." In the bible, this is the name of a son of Gad. Haggi is the Anglicized form.
CHAGI: Variant spelling of Hebrew Chaggiy, meaning "festive."
CHAIM: Variant spelling of Hebrew Chayim, meaning "life."
CHAKLAI (חַייקֶעל): Hebrew name meaning "farmer."
CHAM (חָם): Hebrew name meaning "blackness" or "heat." In the bible, this is the name of Noah's second son. The Anglicized form is Ham.

DATHAN (דָּתָן): Hebrew name meaning "belonging to a fountain." In the bible, this is the name of a son of Eliab who, with his brother Abiram, joined Korah in his rebellion against Moses.
DAVID (דָּוִד, דָּוִיד): Hebrew name meaning "beloved." In the bible, this is the name of a son of Jesse. David was the second king of Israel and father of King Solomon. As a youth he killed a giant named Goliath with his slingshot.
DEKEL (דֶּקֶל): Hebrew name meaning "date/palm tree."
DELAYA: Variant spelling of Hebrew Delayah, meaning "God has drawn."
DELAYAH (דְּלָיָה): Hebrew name meaning "God has drawn." In the bible, this is the name of several characters, including a descendant of Zerubbabel.

EDEN (עֵדֶן): Hebrew unisex name meaning "delight" or "place of pleasure." In the bible, this is the name of the garden in which Adam and Eve lived.
EDER (עֵדֶר):Hebrew unisex name meaning "herd, flock." In the bible, this is the name of a Levite who lived in the time of David, and the name of a town in the south of Judah. Compare with another form of Eder.
EDI: Variant spelling of Hebrew Eidi, meaning "my witness." Compare with another form of Edi.
EDOM (אֶדוֹם): Hebrew name meaning "red." In the bible, this is the name of an ancient kingdom, and a name applied to Esau and his descendants.
EFA (עֵיפָה): Variant spelling of Hebrew unisex Efah, meaning "darkness" or "gloomy."
EFAH (עֵיפָה): Variant spelling of Hebrew unisex Eyphah, meaning "darkness" or "gloomy."

Well, you have the link at the top, so I don't think any more copy-paste is really needed

Miko will do. :p

Things to keep in mind are that the Mortis-pattern dreadnought is unique to the Dark Angels., and apparently all Mortis dreads are now Contemptors, so you've picked a good chapter to work with.

Your Contemptor would have to be a greatly honoured brother to be entombed in such a rare sarcophagus. He probably died (well, not quite, but you know what I mean) showing great skill. Courage isn't so much a defining trait in these circumstances since, well, Space Marine.

Therefore, his backstory should revolve around his particular specialities. What's his other arm? A melee weapon would suggest someone skilled with that weapon, while a ranged weapon would imply that he was keen of eye and steady of hand.

Any chapter can use Mortis (and Contemptor-Mortis) Dreadnoughts - rules are in 'Imperial Armour Volume Two – Second Edition: War Machines of the Adeptus Astartes'.

Don't rush it and give it time. Maybe picking a name from him (that list is huge!) will give you some inspiration from its meaning (if you pick the name for the phonetics rather than the meaning )

DA don't have Hebrew names generally but Hebrew-style angelic names (i.e., generally ending with "-el") specifically. Of course, they could just as easily have non-angelic names (e.g., Luther).

The "-el" suffix signifies God, via Elohim. Thus, angelic names usually translate into something about God. Michael is "who is like God" and Gabriel is "God is my strength." Ezekiel is "may God strengthen him."

Edom Ham, a marine who was gravely injured in one of his own pyrotechnic displays, who continues to burn down the enemies of the Emperor with holy fire.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

My point was, Ezekiel was a prophet, not an angel. Michael, Gabriel, etc are all angels. Belial (A mutation of Beliel) is a demon.

I never said Ezekiel was an angel. He had a name in the Hebrew pattern of angelic names, thanks to the -el suffix.

What we don't see is DA with generic Hebrew names: Benjamin, David, Jacob, etc.

"Belial" is not a mutation of "Beliel" ("-yaal" vs. "-el" suffix). But I would bet whoever at GW used the name because in English it has a similar sound and comes from the Old Testament. Plus, according to Christian mythology, demons are fallen angels.

@OP: How about you make all of your dreadies pre-HH Marines recruited from Caliban. Give them medieval knightly names:

Dagonet
Mordred
Roland
Ganelon
Lorant
Pinabel
Bedivere
Tristan
Pellinor

thats really not a bad idea, although wouldnt they all be different variant dreads then? plus 10K years old i know the sarcophagus give immortality but doesnt it also make the marine entombed deteriorate? for example i think its Lhorke? old legion master of the world eaters/war hounds said that at first he didnt need rest but after years it got progressively worse. for example he would be awake for a couple of years and then rest for 1 but then he would be awake for a week and sleep for a decade it gets worse as time goes on. i dont know if this was just the first dreads where the tech hadnt been perfected or whether its all dreads.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
plus there is one more dread who i forgot to mention. he was a champion of the chapter. he is armed with a CC claw with a combi bolter and a spear

Why so?

Certainly not physically and not necessarily unto incapacity in mental terms. Cf. Bjorn the Fell handed. Of course, the SW only wake Bjorn up once in a thousand years or when the peril is extra perilous but hey that can be every time you play 40k as far as the rules are concerned.

welcome to warhammer 40k. "rememebr that fluff you loved so dearly? yeah we've changed it!"

IIRC the altest edition of IA has said that other chapters may deploy ONE. and only DAs may deploy more then ONE

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

The sarcophagus does not grant immortality... it's just that no one is really sure how long a Space Marine can live, and is not subject to the normal frailties of the flesh, since all of that is taken over by the life-support system of the Dread. Bjorn has lived as long as he has because he spends most of his time in a stasis field, and every time they wake him up, it takes longer and longer for him to come "on-line", as it were.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
