Subject: Hit & Run vs Morale Tests?

How do Morale tests and Hit & Run interact?
Hit & Run;
-happens at the END of an Assault Phase
-prevents Sweeping Advance rolls
Morale Tests;
-happen before sweeping advance, before end of combat pile in, therefore DURING the Assault Phase
So, in order, you would:
-determine assault results
-check morale
-hit & run (because a successful hit & run prevents sweeping advance)
-sweeping advance
right?
Does this mean a unit that FAILS morale Falls Back before using Hit & Run, therefore disallowing them from using Hit & Run at all because they are no longer locked in combat?
Or
Do they not suffer any penalties of morale tests at all?
Came up in a game the other day; my Haemonculus killed a Crisis Suit 1" away from Tau table edge, winning combat by 2. The Tau player then Hit & Run his surviving suits out of the combat. Should he have made a morale test or no? And if he did, could he have fallen back off the table?
I believe relevant rules are on p.26-27, 29, and 38.
Thanks for your time & help!

The way i allways played it is that you do Hit and run if you pass your leadership for staying inn the combat.

• Pick a combat and resolve attacks.
- Work out combat result.
- Take Morale test.
- If failed Morale, resolve Sweeping Advance.
• Pick another combat, repeat above steps.
• When all combats resolved, activate any "End of Assault Phase" abilities - such as Hit and Run.
The reference to Sweeping Advance in the H&R rules is to clarify that despite your unit leaving combat, the enemy cannot sweep them.

Hit and run happens at the end of the assault phase, not the end of any particular fight sub phase.
As such it happens after all assaults have taken place and been fully resolved.
If you look at the chart on the first page of the assault section it shows that you determine assault results then move onto the next fight sub phase, or end the assault phase if none are left.
Under determine assault results, units that lost combat must make a morale check.
So the morale checks happen before the end of the assault phase when hit and run takes place.
So yes, they must test for morale and resolve falling back/sweeping before they will ever get a chance to hit and run.

I agree with and understand what you've all posted.
It's this line that causes the rift between my and my friend's understanding. He reads it to mean no Sweeping Advances are made at all. Ergo, if they fail their morale check it doesn't matter 'cause they can't be swept.

And they can't be sweeping advanced... when they use Hit&run. By that time they will have already been sweeping advanced or not per the normal assault rules and the order of events laid out.
Tell you friend it's ok though, the book is full of these little "reminders" and "clarifications" that generally create more confusion than understanding. Per the SA rules it cannot be used vs H&R because it only works on fallback moves and H&R is not a fallback move. Also per the turn order as has been stated the two do not coincide... so... why does hit&run even mention sweeping advance?
Well that's just GWs idea of "clarity"
