So I purchased the open fire! box set. I was curious of what I should add to the germans to make a stronger force. I have been looking at an artillery battery and maybe a machine gun platoon. What are your thoughts?

My first choice would be some nebelwerfers. After that depends which force you are doing, maybe more pak40's or mortars. Then perhaps panthers or pz 4/70

What book or list are you planning to use? It's a better idea to have a list and build to that then just buying units and trying to find a use for them later.

The free PDF's are a god send. I'm not a German player myself but I have all the German ones anyway (useful to know your enemy eh)! Anyway, the PDF for the 2nd and SS Gebirgsdivisions is a very good one. Use your grenadiers as the Confident Veteran 2nd Gebirgsdivison and drool over the support choices you have. It's a very strong list.
I agree with Reaver that Nebelwerfers are a good choice. Rocket launchers will be a pain in the arse for your opponent.

Mgs are good, you can attach them out to your rifle platoons. For me German arty wise,i prefer howitzers.I am a big fan of arty.I own 3 artilery parks,GErman,Brit and American.i prefer the 15 cm gun for the GErmans,Especially since you do need to have equal amount of lesser guns to field.Which is something the Allies can not.

Here isa good starter freebie, http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Briefings/Kampfgruppe-Kastner.pdf

MG platoons will help you a lot, either in direct fire support, or in warding off an advance on your objectives.

Mortars that can smoke are vital, it certainly will help you survive.
