I was wondering if anyone had any news on finecast and where it falls on the schedule to be phased out. I'm pretty sure the last finecast releases were with the Tau last year, but there were rumours that forgeworld would be taking over the production of all remaining finecast kits.

Has there been any update as to whether forgeworld has or willl be producing finecast moving forward? I'm looking to purchase some commander farsight kits, but would prefer forgeworld resin. The 3 farsights I have now are in good shape, it's just that finecast makes me nervous with how flexible the slimmer pieces can be at times hehe.

Thanks!

There were pictures of the upcoming White Dwarf Weekly that showed two Crisis Suit Commanders. One was Finecast, one was a darker resin that looked like Forgeworld's resin. I don't think anything was specifically said about the material, it's just what people were seeing.

I'll take a plastic kit for my HQ's por favor. Got my first Finecast as a gift from GW for messing up my order and I promptly broke 987 things off of it.

I used to not mind finecast, then I dropped my Shadowsun about 6 inches and that little shoulder antenna broke off... never....again....

Seconded. Though all we have is the circumstantial evidence by virtue of the comparison. I haven't seen other people get finecast kits with the same, dark resin as in the WDW.

I may have some news on that.

Take this as a rumour and heaps of salt, but this is what i have been told.

Citadel Finecast as for Fantasy and 40K will eventually be phased out completely by 2016, this will be replaced by plastic, eg Marneus Calgar and Honour Guard, currently Finecast, but will get the plastic treatment. But here is the kicker, it takes a lot of time and a shed load of money to do this and it is more difficult than folks realise.

Making plastic injection molds isn't so much 'difficult' as 'really, really expensive'. It takes a decent amount of sales to get a return on the investment, and if those sales aren't made then the model is a loss for the company. Without a fundamental change in plastics technology in general I can't see unique character models being made in plastic like that, especially one like Calgar who has been available in for a long time now - most people who want the model will own it..

My own theory is based on the following:
  • Re-occurring rumours of the main GW line merging with FW online and in stores

  • Heavy spending on web development in the latest GW financials

  • No new Finecast models in 40k for almost a year now (I don't know about Fantasy)

  • I reckon the GW and FW websites will merge into one, with FW production handling low-yield models such as named characters (like Calgar) or upgrade kits (like the new Tyranid Devourer arms). Some larger GW stores will stock FW items, while for others you'll be able to order online and get free delivery to the store. Characters will start to be made in FW resin, starting with new releases or remakes of old ones (such as Phoenix Lords). Depending on stock levels, we'll see newer sculpts moved to the new resin without change.
FW resin will probably get some cheesy rebranding too, like Supercast™ or whatever.
