Like many around here my FLGS is doing a kill team tourney soon and since I'm getting my Eldar built up it seemed like a nice thing to get into.

At 200 pts here is the list

5 Rangers - 60 points

7 Swooping Hawks -132/137
exarch with either sunrifle or talon

Total=192/197

For specialist I'm thinking a relentless ranger. A sniper hawk (for rending and 4+) and then either a poison hawk or feel no pain hawk.

I would love to hear what you think of this list. The basic idea being that the hawks can handle any horde unit with their guns, and any vehicle with their grenades. The rangers are there for any higher toughness enemies the hawks s3 lasblaster might struggle with (which is why I'm considering poison/sniper for specialist traits). I dont know whether to take the sunrifle for the blind and ap3 or the talon for the str5 on the exarch, I would like to know your opinions.

I do have other models and units to mess around with but in my head it seems hawks cover a lot of bases in kill team with their range/speed and anti-infantry/vehicle possibilities. That being said I'm open to being swayed to a different unit should someone present a compelling argument.

Thanks in advance guys.

Sunrifle exarch with fleshbane

Ranger with shred

Hawk with rending

Those are what I would choose.

Thanks for the reply! But, I think you may be going by the older rules. In the newer rules the leader (exarch) cant take any USR's. Also shred is now only for melee weapons. Finally I was thinking I was clever by using Sniper over Rending because it basically gives rending+poisoned.

Remember that each of those hawks can jump out every other turn, dropping three templates one turn, four templates the next and so on.

I was really wishing that was the case. But I'm fairly certain in the new rules there is no way for units to enter ongoing reserves or deep strike in. If they could that would be amazing with 7 small blasts and non-scattering deep strikers.

As for my op sorry I was, also the hawks special rule skyleap can be used in missions not allowing reserves.

I'm pretty much certain you can't join ongoing reserves in Kill Team, much to the dismay of my hawks. Still I'm hoping their range/speed and rof help with that.

No flesh bane on ranged weapons.

Also, it may be worth it to take DA over rangers. Taking an exarch allows your hawk exarch with sun rifle to burn if you give him something like Sniper or Poison. Power lances are actually fairly effective on the exarch as well, funnily enough.

My thoughts, take with a pinch of salt. Or a handful.

My $0.02, which since 1992 has rounded to nothing. Take with salt.

This is correct.

They can still only target one guy a turn. Rate of Fire isn't as important as weaponry that inflicts damage. You'll not be any better off against Hordes than you would with Dire Avengers.

If you want to use jump troops, use Spiders instead. They're effective at range against vehicles, have even more mobility, and have significantly better weapons. They also have better armor save, so they're harder to kill. Exarch is probably not as good as the Swooping Hawks exarch but he also doesn't need any of his upgrades to be effective.

You really don't need to blow indomitable specialist on a Ranger for Relentless. With infiltrate, they'll get to where they need to be. If you REALLY need to move and shoot, they've still got their pistol, and Battle Focus. Their pistol is actually better against T3 units, and is equal to their longrifle against T4 units. Odd but true.

Because you can't enter play via deep strike, nor enter ongoing reserves, Hawks are just bad for Kill Team. Its fine that they are. Not every unit that's great in regular 40k transitions to Kill Team as well as others.

addendum: If you do go Spiders, I'd probably give one Tank Hunter (S7 with rerolls to armor pen rolls, where you're usually shooting at armor 11 is pretty nice). Preferred Enemy is always fun in KT, doesn't really matter if it's on a spider or sniper. Poison 4+ is also pretty handy on a Spider. S6 would mean you'd reroll wounds on literally anything you could shoot at so you're only not forcing saves if you whiff both your shots.

If you go poison 4+ doesn't that make it worse needing a 4+ with re-roll instead of just 2+?

Nope. Poison rules are worded you still wound on what would be the better dice (in this case, S6 to T3/4/5) and if the Strength is equal to Toughness, you get rerolls.

It's essentially 2+ to wound with rerolls. This is why you don't ever see Poison as a rule on weapons with more than 2 strength, typically. Plague Marines are about the only thing I can think of, which is one of the reasons they are so good in melee despite only being I3.

That's pretty cool, also I haven't played kill team since older rules, can you define who has to be the leader?

Leader has to be the Character unit with the highest Leadership, or a model with the highest leadership if no characters are present. In the case of a tie, you simply nominate one or the other.

For the purposes of Eldar, it's usually worth upgrading an Exarch to bring purely for their increased survivability with 3+ armor. It'll be a huge target one way or the other, so might as well make it as good a unit as you can.

I'm inclined to disagree on the exarch with a sunrifle. That is a 25 point upgrade... 1/8th of your total points. Not worth it IMO. Just get another hawk.

Sunrifle is pretty useless in Kill Team anyway. How often do you need to blind people? Better to just take something that'll get kills.
