Hey guys,
I've had a bit of trouble against a tau player who fields two riptides along with pathfinder squads during 600pt games and have been trying to think up a list to beat him with and here's what I thought of:
HQ- Rune priest w/runic amour 120pt (Jaws of world wolf + Living Lightning)
Troops- 2x 5 Man vanilla Grey Hunters squads 150pt
Elites- Iron Priest w/ 2x cyber-wolf 80pt
Heavy support- Land Raider Redeemer w/ multi-melta 250pt
Plan is to charge the land raider up-field with the rune priest and iron priest inside weathering shots from the riptides (only get a blast shot each capable of hurting the raider) then disembark the units right in the face of the riptide and Jaws from behind the land raider (as jaws doesn't effect vehicles) to block LOS to my priest to take out the initiative 2 riptides whilst charging his pathfinders with the iron priest and cyber-wolves (not forgetting the flame-storm cannons), and the grey hunters can just... I don't know pose dramatically? Maybe claim an objective?
Anyway that's my list designed to be a little more fun than competitive and would likely only function on the 48"x48" board but I'd like to know if it has any chance at all so, thoughts?
Also if someone knows whether or not cyber-wolves get frag grenades from the redeemer's assault grenades ability I would appreciate the input.

I'm sorry, but what the heck else is he fielding? Just from what you listed that is minimum 404 points. He will have almost nothing else on the table.

Drop pod the rune priest. Those transports probably won't make it across the table.

Got the list:
HQ- etherial 50pt
Troops- 2x vanilla Fire Warriors 108pt
Elites- 2x Riptide w/ ion accelerator 370pt
Fast Attack- Pathfinders w/two addtional models 66pt
Comes to 594pt with 6pt to spend on cheap upgrades
So no not much on the table but as I've mentioned 600pt lists I've seen all have major trouble dealing with the dual riptides supported by marklights at range, not forgetting the crazy tau overwatch and the support system on the riptide giving it 5+ overwatch for any deep-strike assults. Automatically Appended Next Post: LordDraken wrote:Drop pod the rune priest. Those transports probably won't make it across the table.
Wasn't so sure about that with 14 all around armour raider is only hurt by the nova charge attack at a 5+ and the standard at a 6+ and they are bothe scatterable blasts (albeit a miss is unlikely) so I reckoned since an across boad move is only 2 flat out turns at max deployment range 4 large blasts at 6 up to glance isn't so bad even worst case scenario its only 4 5 ups.
But I never considered using a drop pod... thanks for pointing that out, I'll see if I can fit that in to the strategy maybe drop the iron priest bring some of the blood claws instead of the grey hunters and load up the drop pod and land raider with those?

That is a really rough list.
I second drop pods. You will get there turn one instead of driving up the board which you might not get there.

agreed if you go drop pods you would also save points from the land raider and add another rune priest. What would be really funny is to see how many rune priests in pods you can fit into a 600pts list and see how he likes spam.
something like this
runepriest - 100
runpriest w/ storm bolter 103
runepriest w/ runic - 120
drop pod x3 105
2x5 grey hunter 150
total=578

You need a squad to take a Drop Pod; they cannot be taken on their own. Your list is illegal.
I would take something like this:
Rune Priest 100
-Jaws of the World Wolf, Living Lightning
Rune Priest 105
-Jaws of the World Wolf, Storm Caller, Meltabombs
6 Grey Hunters 135
-Plasmagun, Drop Pod
6 Grey Hunters 135
-Plasmagun, Drop Pod
6 Grey Hunters 125
-Flamer, Drop Pod
The Rune Priests will join the squads with Plasmaguns and drop down on the first turn. Use Jaws of the World Wolf and target the Riptides - you should be able to get at least 1 dead Riptide per turn.

Hey thanks a lot for the advice guys since I'm new to lists I really appreciate the advice. I think I'll drop the land raider and go for the list Gorgosaurusrex suggested. Again thanks to all who took the time to help a noob like me.

Land Raiders aren't great in 600 point games. I wouldn't consider taking one until 1,500 points.
Remember, Jaws of the World Wolf eats Riptides. The model is removed from play, so no 2+ armor or 3+ inv can save it. Your friend needs to be taught a lesson for taking 2 Riptides against a noob at 600 points!

Just had a thought, is the third drop pod necessary? I was thinking I could grab a 5 man squad of long fangs w/missile launchers each for 115pts and then give my second rune priest meltabombs and a wolf tail talisman as well for the 10 left over.
Should give me 4 flexible troops to help combat any other lists... Alternatively I could increase the squad size to a 6-man squad w/ heavy bolters for the same points, that would give 15 strength 5 AP 4 shots a turn at 36" range, albeit without the blast option
Just mentioning it as it would save me buying a third drop pod (I already have the rest of the list). What do you think?

The third Drop Pod is really crucial as it allows your other two Drop Pods to come down on turn 1. If you have 2 Drop Pods then only 1 comes down on turn 1. You always want to take Drop Pods in odd numbers to maximize this.
Drop Pods are one of the best ways to play Space Wolves right now, so it would be a worth investment IMO.

My ideal counter list would be:
Runepriest
Jaws, murderous hurricane = 100
Runepriest
jaws, L.Lightning, melta bomb = 105
5 grey hunters, plasma gun, drop pod = 120
5 grey hunters, flamer, drop pod = 110
wolf guard
4 with combi plasma
1 terminator with heavy flamer
drop pod = 165
= 600 points
One runepriest in with the plasma hunters, the other in with the wolf guard.
The terminator attaches to the flamer hunters for hunting the pathfinders and fire warriors.
You can split off a combi plasma wolf guard to go in the plasma hunters if you want.
But be prepared for interceptor riptides the next time you play him after pods

Can't models with interceptor only fire at the pods themselves, though? The Grey Hunters aren't arriving from reserves. They are disembarking from a Drop pod that is arriving from reserves. Interceptor only allows you to target units arriving from reserve. Has this been FAQ'd?

Sounds like a good list. Do you think I should spec my basic guys with bolt pistol and chainsword or boltgun? I was thinking plasma squad gets boltgun and flamer gets pistol as they're most likely to charge/get charged.

Grey Hunters have both at all times, you always are fighting with two CCW, and can shoot up to 24", there is no picking required.
