Cool idea I like it, especially since the pin will keep any other damage consistent and be of much more use in creating bullet damage coming in from an angle, rather than just head on, which is how you usually see it done.

No, I haven't notice that problem. Now the candle wax can get melted to the pin you can see that in the video. It's the black stuff on the pin. But your can remove that with a paper towel and some water.

I would be cool if you did this after you finished painting it so the ash would enhance the effect, making it look like they were tracer rounds or somtin.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I wonder how it'd look if you did it on a painted model. You could maybe spray dark brown or black spots and then hot pin in that area to get a more concentrated burn point.
