The 40k tourney circuit just died here and I am looking for a new game. I will spare you the details of that drama. So on to the goods. My crew and I enjoyed 40k. The level of customizable figures and armies was a main attraction as was the competitive tourney circuit.
War machine, has the competitive circuit but lacks variety inside the units. Malifaux lacks size and customizable options. Fantasy battles is out because the unspoken drama is heading there.
Batman would be perfect if it had a higher level of customizable options, I believe it would catch like wildfire if it did.
Clix are idiotic in the opinion of my group and cardboard crack is out. No one in my group has enjoyed a ccg since DBZ by score.
nothing currently on kickstart. We want something that can be started within a month.
What would you advise for that lump of background.

Did you enjoy Necromunda? Try picking up Deadzone, it'll cost you around $100 for the intro game, and each team (around 12-13 models, plus full deck of team cards) is $35 retail. You have plenty of variety per team, and conversions are totally doable (I have 3 in my enforcer army already).
If that doesn't scratch your itch, try X-Wing: hugely popular, low buy-in cost (but you'll probably buy duplicates anyway), and you can vary your list quite a bit. Models are pre-painted to VERY high quality (for pre-paints or for casual painters).
If those fail, I leave it to others.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

If you want a fun super-customizable game, then I'd suggest Song of Blades and Heroes. It doesn't have a tournament scene at all, but it's super cheap to get started and will give you guys the chance to paint up the fantasy figures you always wanted (or have sitting in your lead pile). It probably won't be the last game you play, but it'll give you somethign to do for a couple months before you settle on the "next big thing".
Great for Campaigns, but watch out for power-gamers. Like all generic systems, it's not too hard to break the game.
X-wing is a good option for competitive play, and can be started quickly, but it's also not customizable. Something to consider though.
Wreck Age is a relatively new post apoc game. Really pretty figures, lots of customization in building your force, but again not much of a tournament scene.

Well, X-wing/Attack Wing does offer the customization your group seems to like and the games seem well suited for Tournamne tstyle play. Start up is also very easy as you substitute $$$ for time and buy things ready to go. It is a pretty quick get-in and get playing kind of game. It is customizable with upgrade cards, pilot options, etc.
You might also want to look into DBA if you want to stick with little toy men. DBA you can often buy complete armies relatively cheaply, The rules can be a touch challenging to interpret, but are typically available cheaply as well. However, it is not customizable at all, instead Fields of Glory maybe a better Ancients Wargame for your preferred style of play.
Battletech may also be up your alley as the level of detail varies based ont eh version you are playing. Clasic can be pretty details and customizable, whiel Alpha Strike is higher level and smoother. You might be able to find the Anniversary box set that came complete with a bunch of (poor quality) plastic mechs to get you started. Painting Mechs is also dead easy.
You might also want to think about trying some board games instead of CCG or Wargames. I don't really have any suggestions, but it is a thought.

Double recommendation on Alpha Strike. Such a great ruleset.
The new Battletech box set has just released and contains much higher quality plastic mechs. The box and Alpha Strike MSRP should run about $90 and you'll have enough mechs to play some very huge battles. Players can read the backgrounds and decide which factions they like the best and pick up appropriate mechs at about $10-$12 retail each.

I will triple recommend Alpha Strike, but if you want more army flavor and such regular Battletech might be of interest as well. A new intro box set is due out very soon and is a good start for anyone getting into it.

Maybe it is time to dust off the old battletech figs. I was never much for homegrown mechs but with a dozen variants per important mech who needs em. Between tech and batman I think I can make it work.
I will research xwing tonight.
anyone have opinions on netrunner?
I wish 40k would have gone belly up here before I got my second forgeworld army... now I am poor. Ebay here I come. Fair the well to about 100,000 points of 40k... if it sells high enough I might try investing in a kickstarter too.

The only other thing I would add is maybe don't limit yourselves to one game.
Alpha Strike (which I really like) is a 30 buck book that can revitalize your whole Battetech collection, but it won't give you a competitive play or tournament scene. If that's something you really like, consider diving into a popular game like Warmachine or X-wing as well.
