I've been trying to come up with something relatively allcomer for the last few weeks but been really struggling.
I can't use any formations or data slates so stuck with the base codex :(. This is my attempt so far..
Hive Tyrant, 2 devourers, wings-230
Hive Tyrant, 2 devourers, wings-230
3 Hive Guard-165
Zoanthrope-50
Venomthrpe-45
3 Warriors-90
10 Termagants-40
10 Termagants-40
10 Termagants-40
Crone-155
Crone-155
Crone-155
Carnifex x2 2 devourers each-300
Biovore-40
Biovore-40
Bastion-75
So my plan is to use the bastion to protect my stuff during setup, flyers harass stuff, try to shoot troops with biovores etc.
Does it look mildy competitive? I know my troops and synapse are light but not sure what I can do really.

Are you shooting for a 1500 point list? EDIT: whoops, now I see it's 1850)
From my experience in the competitive scene (my first tourney with my nids was last weekend) is you'll be fine but you need some more board presence. My list below is pretty similar to yours with some minor changes.
I went 2-2-1 after playing 2 Dark Angels players, an Ork battlewagon rush, a well put together CSM TAC list, and an Sisters of battle list.
My list:
Flyrant + dual devourers
Flyrant + dual devourers + HC
Venomthrope
Zoanthrope
Tervigon
30 Gants
24 Hormagaunts
25 Gargoyles
2 Carnifexen + Dual Devourers
Tyrannofex + Adrenal glands
3 Biovores
Bastion
Total=1850
Everything (except the gargoyles) came through for me at one point or another.
So yes, basic premise is the same, but I have lots of bodies to deal with and a pretty resilient scoring + Synapse unit.
Based on my experience from my tourney I have a few changes that I would include:
First, strategy....Don't embark your venomthrope unless he's being threatened....2 out of the 3 games I did this, the Bastion was targetting and thereby destroyed (so my lynchpin synergy unit was killed).
Second, list.....2+ Tyrannofex was amazing to bounce krak grenades off. I will be dropping the gargoyles and sadly, the biovores for an additional Tyrannofex. My thoughts on this is because the Biovores and Tyrannofex pretty much fulfill the same roll. Ignore cover, AP 4, distance weaponry. Albiet, the Tyrannofex is needs a closer proximity, that is also providing a high priority target for your opponent to deal with. Especially with Onslaught and Adrenal glands, you're talking a 29" threat range for the Tyrannofex.
Don't get me wrong, Biovores were great, they just didn't do quite enough. They hit EVERY shot in the tournament (at least had 1 blast hit, which to me is still a hit) and they also provided a cool S6 barrage effect that could snipe sergants and potentially ID T3 models. Pinning never was relevant and they were pretty easy to kill.
My opinion would be to start over with your troops and do away with the single biovore units. You're begging to give up First blood with any of the units.
Otherwise, a pretty damn good list and you'll do well against some matchups and poorly against others. If you want to take into consideration, the majority of your matchups (assuming you win your first game) will be against some sort of Tau/Eldar combination or Space marines you should concentrate on building a list to best suit you in those situations.

I'd drop one Crone, and buy more/Larger Troops. This is "just me", but I'd drop the Hive Guard, and buy 3 Zoeys, the run two broods of x2. Thats two rolls on Powers of the Hive Mind!, and a very durable source of Synapse, times two.
If you want a bastian, its likely worth while to put something on it like a gun, or coms relay...? Dropping the Crone, and buying Zoeys nets 170 to upgrade Troops and buy stuff, so if you go to x20 for the Termigants, that leaves 50? That should cover a upgrade, or a bastion weapon just fine.
