So,I need to add some more units to my Ultramarine army. It is kinda outdated, and needs some more modern units. I don't have any of the new units from 5th edition on,so I was wondering what may bee good units too add?

What do you consider "good"?

What do you already have?

What do you want your army to do?

20 Tac Marines, 10 Scouts(5 bolters 5 snipers) Dreadnought,5 Regular Terminators, Land Raider Crusader, 2 Predators(Auto Cannon+Heavy Bolters and Twin Linked Lasconn with Sponsers),10 Devestators,10 Assualt Marines and 3 Scout Bikers. Plus a Captain and a Liberian. I dont really have a planned direction for my army, at least at the moment, I do want some stuff that can move it up a little competitively though.

Is making it easier for you to win a game your only concern?

Because if it is, I've got some forgeworld and allies I can recommend.

Okay, so a good unit is one what is fun?

How do you define fun?

Ailaros, I realize you may legitimately be trying to narrow down your focus to better answer his question, but you're coming off a smidgen pedantic.

Captain Sour, I would recommend the following since you play Ultramarines specifically:

Tigirus (The Special Character Librarian) is a great addition to your Ultramarines. Also Telion for your sniper Scout Squad is also fun (precision shots with a Rending Boltgun). Also, Calgar can be fun, if not expensive.

More Tactical Marines is always a bonus, I typically prefer at least 30 of them in a 1500 point list. More bodies = more scoring units on objectives.

Thunderfire Cannons are amazingly useful and very good for what you pay for. Plus you get a Techmarine with the cannon and his bolster defenses rule on top of everything else. Highly recommend picking one up.

A squad of Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield terminators is also a great unit to ride in your Land Raider as a deathstar. Roll up, dump them out and charge. Not saying they're the be-all-end-all of assault units out there, but 95% of the stuff they charge will not be happy to see them in base-to-base.

Past that, perhaps some transports for your Marines, (Drop Pods, or Rhinos/Razorbacks) or, failing that, perhaps look into a fortification such as an Aegis Defense Line with an anti-air weapon such as an Icarus Lascannon or Quadgun is a good addition generally for anti-flyer purposes. If you run Telion, putting him on said gun can make for some fun/interesting shenanigans with his sniping rule.

Lastly, the flyers you can get are also useful. Storm Raven or Storm Talons, either or. I prefer the Storm Raven personally but both can be useful.

That's what I'd recommend looking at. If you don't already have the new SM codex, pick it up and check things out. At the very least, I'd get Tigirius, a Thunderfire Cannon, and some SS/TH assault terminators to roll around in your LRC.

Hope that helps, and welcome back to playing also.

Take it easy,

-Red__Thirst-

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Consider bikes, they are dirt cheap. 2 Grav-guns, 1 combi-grav, 3 bikes, T5, 3+ Save, fast as hell and all of that for an almost insulting price of 103 pts. 103pts!! For TL Bolters and a potential of 9 grav-guns shots.

Thunderfire Cannon is always included on my lists, try to use them and you'll learn to love those death spittting machines.

Stormraven is also a good choice wich I almost always end up using.. The utility, fire power and survivability of that flyer is absurd.

I can't recommend Centurions if you aren't using Tigurius, their insane price, lack of mobility, lack of inv and their inability to overwatch makes their pricetag stupid high if it isn't used with Divination.

Legion of the Damned is also a very good choice for specialised tasks. Tigurius can re-roll their reserves, they re-roll scatter themselves, have 3++ save and they can get 3 melta weapons that ignores cover (no jink saves for you!) for a measly 155 pts. (which is TL if you are using Vulkan) vs 185 pts. for a Sternguard with 3 combi-meltas and a drop pod.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, if you're looking for something fun in your games, you can get an Imperial Bastion with the Lascannon and have it operated by Sgt. Telion. Since his shots ALWAYS are precision shots, you basically have a dude with a 96" AP2 S9 sniper that sits on a vantage point which grants him vision to the entire map. You can snipe all seargeants/special weapons, ignore armor and instakill anything that's below T5+/Eternal Warrior.
It really itsn't that OP, but it can give you great fun and cause a lot of frustration for your opponent.

I throw down two command squads. 5 meltas in a drop pod, 5 flamers in a drop pod. They are absurdly hilarious. Another funny one is 5 land speeders with 2 hvy bolters each. Not terribly survivable but hot damn theyer fun.

You say you hate it but you wont do anything about it? What the serious ork?

Command squad with flamers + apoth + Vulkan in a drop pod is my own personal setup. I've killed Terminator blobs, Chaos Nurgle Lord on bike with Nurgle Bikers and pretty much anything it chooses to aim their guns towards. The ammount of wounds they can dish out is hillariously stupid.

Sternguard. Preferably in a drop pod. You can also pick up the tyranic war vets to mix into the squad for looks. Very good from a mechanics POV, and feel like marines should. The new kit is cram packed full of awesome.

Bikes are very strong in this edition. Grabbing a squad for the FA slot is fun. You can work up a bike captain and move them to troops if you want. It’s worth it, even if you stick to UM tactics.

You’ll need some form of AA these days. An ADL w/quadgun is a great place to stash your sniper scouts behind, and add cover to a gunline. Both of our flyers are solid. Not the best things in the air, but respectable.

Grabbing a land speeder storm will make your bolter scouts happy.

You could use more transports in general.

You have a fairly solid core, where you go from there depends a lot on what you like.

It's not my fault the OP is being vague. This is just another one of those "tell me what to do" threads without any input parameters.

The most he's going to get is people telling them what they do, not what's best for him. The thread is already filled with people saying what to do, but not even the smallest hint of why to do it.

Veterans/honour guard are good. THe thunderfire cannons are masterful... op against most armies. (though thud guns from forge world is better). Land raiders are good to surprise the meta.

From what I keep hearing the main heart of an army are the tac marines so definitely a few of them, a few assault squads, terminators, scouts and some cool hq characters. Top that off with dreads and a land raider redeemer. If you're feeling rich then stick in an imperial knight or a set of centurions.

Just my opinion

Only through chaos can peace be obtained,
Destruction is our future but we shall not fall from it, We will rise up stronger than ever before and stand together united as one,

10 man squad of Sternguard, fully kitted out with combi-weapons, a CCW and melta bombs, tailor the weapons to what role you need them to do, melta for tank popping, plasma/grav for heavy infantry set deterrent, flamers for anti horde. They're an auto take in my book.
