Hi,

I'm looking at doing a large scale 40k battle with a group of friends. I was thinking of 2000pts/player. should we keep to the FOC or us the 1999+1 (could someone clarify this method) method I've seen a few times?

Cheers Captain Bloody Fists

Why not give Apocalypse a try? That sounds like what you're planning. Make it 3000 points per player and have at it!

Apoc has no point restrictions though! Or turn limits! (I wish I was joking there)

But seriously, large battles work best with some points limits per player. Up to you if you want double FOC, but it's probably not necessary.

From my own experience you play it a few ways:

1) Just like normal 40k but say 3 players per side at 2000pts each player (12,000 points total on the table!). Avoid escalation and go with original terrain choices.

2) Make it clear Apocalypse is being played and do not hold back. Had some people use Apoc. formations and I held back on the larger models and got stomped: go big or go home.

3) Designed scenarios. Take a look at Malifaux “Schemes” and “Strategies” things like 2 victory points if you proclaim your objective at the start of the game or only one if you do not (pull from random objective pool (possibly require two). Attack/Defence, Raids, Hold the Line, Take out the big guns, any number of things can be shamelessly stolen from some other game (or published scenario) and incorporated in.

I have played all of the above:
1) Is great fun but players do tend to pair off to fight with the occasional random shot being made from the other groups.
2) Big scrap, very unpredictable: had one sided destruction, massive tar pit play and nail biters of equal measure.
3) Tend to be the most fun, had armies trying to do things completely the opposite of what they would normally once (luck of the draw too!), it was hilarious.
Had one game where a casual gamer was "watching" and set it up where when anyone grabbed the objectives they were items of significant power to Chaos.
The guy got to play a 1000 point grey knight army and 1000 CSM army that deployed at opposite ends of the table width with specific rules to attack and destroy anyone in their way or near an objective (On turn two). The carnage was fantastic and the other players had no idea.

It really comes down to what you think would be fun and a challenge.

Apocalypse has whatever point restriction or turn limit you set on it.

well, You're going to need a big table first off. for 2v2 I think 6'x10' is about perfect.

Game wise, just setup multiple objective types. ... I need a picture to help me here....

Blue areas are deployment zones, green are Crusade objectives (worth 3vp), red is a 'king of the hill' worth 8-10 points.
Secondary are KP, with Warlord/Linebreaker/Firstblood being used for tiebreakers. Make sure to have plenty of terrain to make it interesting, and voila!

HHmmmm, yes, a 54mm scale 2k point army would be wild. Oh, not that kinda large.....

Going by the RAW of the new Apoc book, there are no points limits (throw everything everyone owns on the table) and the game ends at a pre-set time, no matter how many turns have passed. Of course, I'm sure no one actually plays it that way, but that's technically how GW believes you should play it.

Dude, who cares about RAW? It's Apocalypse. The whole point is for it to be fun and crazy, not play a strictly by the book tournament game. There's no FOC in Apocalypse, but points are definitely still on the table. And even then, it's not like the game is a timebomb and it has to end by 10pm. Just use typical variable game length rules if you want. It sounds to me like you're missing the point of Apocalypse here!

Long story short we've never played an apocalypse game and it's rather short notice for us to get models into formations.

my thoughts (and I can be wrong) was to go with 2000pts, 1/HQ & 2/Troops (minimum) then go nuts. I'm going to, depending on the number of players, put a turn limit on it since we've only got 12hrs to play it.

I have done this before with 3v3 and 3,000 points a side. We never really specified double force org, but I kind of had to double mine to get to 3000 points and I'm pretty sure everybody else did too.

Something we did that was fun was rig up a bunch of board game boards along the center of the table then deploy simultaneously. After that we had an "unveiling ceremony". I'm so glad that I had a special 8 ft long table, we used every inch of our deployment zones...

Here's a couple pictures just for fun and to give you an idea what you will be dealing with.

@Dementedwombat that's not a bad idea to put some mystery into how your enemy is setting up.

haha well I've ignored most of the apoc rules thus far myself, I'm just saying GW's suggestions suck.

What happens to warlords etc? Do the individual players have a warlord and then have a single players that's nominated as the head of the side for like kill the warlord points

I think so, I believe every player has a Warlord and then one Warlord on each side is nominated as the Warmaster, who is worth extra VP.
