What is the perfect point level for 40k in today's current game environment? I hear many gamers asking this question with some even saying it it the answer to Escalation!

I find this a tough question because I like to play large games as much as the next player but I find myself wanting to play a certain point level more and more these days.

1500 points was at one point the standard for many years back in the day and perhaps should be taken seriously in today's 40k as well!

What is your ideal points level and why?

Personally I think 1250-1500; enough to have some toys without being uber broken by allowing nonsense like superheavies. Maybe as far as 1850 since that is/was the normal tournament level, but IMO any higher than that and things start to become more like 28mm Epic and less like 40k

This is more or less my opinion as well. I would add that different armies work best at different point levels, so be sure you chat with your friends to see what they want to play at.

I tend to think the magic number is 1850. Not terribly small and you can bring your expensive toys, all while not being too large and following a single FOC chart.

500 - 1000.

That with lots of terrain makes for fun games. Then the rare large games where you bring titans etc can be fun every so often too.

I prefer in the range of 1850 to 2.5k, more than enough points to bring all I need and then some

750.

Thanks to points deflation, this is the level you've got to stoop to to make the game about meaningful choices, rather than just spamming your best unit and playing codex yahtzee.

I could see up to 1000, though. By the time you pass 1500, though, you might as well just be playing apocalypse.

As many points as we can cram onto the field. Throw all the models on there and put more in reserve to walk on later!

1500 has been the point level for a while, but around 3rd and 4th edition or so all of the units had their prices slashed in half, so really what we are playing today is 3000 points from 2nd editon. 1500 is a decent point because it allows the inclusion of the mandatory units and often one of each of the other slots as well, and allows for more TAC type lists to be viable. I've played at a lot of different point levels through the years and keep coming back to 1500. At 2500 and above you are spoiled for options that you can include. At 500 it is tough to include just the mandatory units depending on your army. 1500 is a good balance of options AND limits to keep the game interesting IMNSHO.

I find around 500 - 1000 points is about right. It's enough to allow a bit of choice in units, while still making troops the core of your army. Another bonus is that it is really easy to change to army list so that you never have to play the same list twice.

1750 or 1850 are my favourites, still one FOC so not so much crazy spam, while letting me take most of the things I want to play with.

Most of my friends seem to want to play 1500 though

Anything really, though my favorite and most memorable battles have been Apoc sized battles (namely 4000 points and higher).
