Do you have somebody to play with regularly?
It´s very expensive to have multiple hundreds of $ gathering dust on your shelf (although painting is fun). If your local gaming group is not into 40k (ok, that´s unlikely, everyone who is into table tops at least has a 40k army) you´ll probably waste your money too.

At the FLGS in my area, while every non- MtG player probably has a 40k army (or 5), there's been a steep droppage in interest in 40k since Escalation came out. People my age have moved to playing Hail Caesar, Bolt Action, or the one in the middle. And the younger people pretty much only play that Star Wars game or Warmachine.

If you like the heresy then get into "30K." You'll get extra mileage out of the books since you enjoy the background and at this point, with the 40k rules sprawl, there is no gamer that would actually refuse to play your 30K list.

this is horrible advice. with a severe lack of familiarity with 30k, many players would be leery of playing 20-man Space Marine jnits with lightweight Baneblades.

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc. |

X-wing is getting very popular of late i myself started playing a few months back, but in general i find people are moving away from the constant rule changes and expensive models constantly being pushed by GW.
