I want to put together a small IG force to use as an ally for my CSM army. Truth be told...I find the IG codex confusing and quite frankly I just don't care to spend the time. (I'm more of a painter...less of a tactician.) Anyway.

What I want is a small force around 500 pts that consists mainly of heavy weapons platforms. I don't need flyers, tanks or anything else...just heavy weapons platforms. I have 3 autocannons right now and want to figure things out before I expand. How many can I get into an allied detachment? Any sort of list would be awesome. They will be wrapped in hordes of zombie cultists for protection so I'm not worried about getting a defense line, higher powered HQ or assault weapons. Just lots o' guns...IG style.

This is a theme army...fluffy and fun. It is not for tournaments by any means.

Thanks.

You can't have just heavy weapons platforms. The platoon system sounds a little intimidating but it's not too bad. It just acts as a mini FOC where you need a platoon command squad and 2 infantry squads before adding anything else.

The bare minimum you'd need is a 5 man platoon command squad (ideally loaded up with flamers) with 20 Guardsmen, armed however you'd like. After that you can take a bunch of heavy weapons squads if you really are so inclined. Finally, get a company command squad (another 5 man squad with a senior officer, best loaded up with plasma or long range weapons due to their higher BS) to command the detachment. The senior officer can order two heavy weapons teams per turn to Bring it Down!, twin linking them against vehicles or monstrous creatures.

So to break it down, you'll need 30 models before you get any heavy weapons teams. It could be a really fun modeling and painting project too!

In about 2 weeks, you'll have a brand new IG codex (Astra Militarum). I'd wait and make modeling/purchasing decisions until after it comes out.

Actually, the minimum would be 26 models before the heavy weapon teams.

This may, however, change with the soon-to-be-released Astra Militarum codex.

I hadn't realized the new codex was coming out that soon. Best to wait then I suppose. Everything seems to be changing with 6th ed.

Thanks for the heads-up guys.

You're welcome. Click me, I'm a link to the discussion thread on the new Imperial Guard codex!

Check that link out. Lots of sneak peak pictures and other information on what's coming your way with IG!

Well yeah, I guess you could have a Primaris Psyker instead, but he wouldn't help as much as the CCS for making the heavy weapons teams useful. Also, a banner in a CCS is handy since it makes the heavy weapons teams less likely to run off.
