Subject: Vallejo Bloody Red - supposed to smell like death?

I've smelt a lot of nasty things in my life, but wow... Vallejo Bloody Red. Have I got a bad bottle of it or something? The last two times I've used it the cat has got up and walked off, it even makes the brush cleaning water smell like something has died in it. The coverage isn't bad for a red, so I guess it's got that going for it.

Worse than the old washes?

For the Lion and Terra!
Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.
With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.
Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

Might be a bad one. I had a Khorne Red bottle smell like strawberry some time ago and a Nuln Oil bottle that reeked to.

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

There could have been a bacterial bloom in the paint. Don't lick your brushes.

Definitely something wrong with your bottle. I've got Valejo's Blood Red and it doesn't smell at all. So something in your pot gone fishy.

Oooo ok thanks for the advice - I do tend to lick my brushes. If it's not normal for the paint to smell like that I'll really have to learn to stop. I wish I could share the smell online, will need to wait for the technology I guess (hopefully the bottle won't have dried out by then).

i would be much more worried about the cadmium in that paint than the bacteria if you are brush licking.

You'd be worried for nothing. Cadmium sulfite is so badly soluble in water or acidic media, that you could eat it by the spoonfull and don't get more than a couple atoms into your system. So the bacteria are much more dangerous.

Most of my brush sucking is to re-point after washing my brush, I noticed last night the water starts to stink as well unless I change it every day.... from what you've said, bacteria sounds like a much bigger concern than chemical poisoning. Thanks Kosake, you've probably added weeks onto my life expectancy by bringing this to my attention

You should thank Ouze, he brought up the idea of bacteria iirc. Depending on what you are growing inside those pots, your life expectancy may vary ^_°

I do the same thing. Yes, it's disgusting. Yes, I gave a great reason why not to do that. Yes, I will almost certainly continue to do that. I do change my brush water every session. No, it's not less gross.

Such a shame it's so effective! Thanks for the info about bacteria, I'll start changing my water every session. This was initially a semi-drunken post I almost didn't make, but I'm glad I did!

Bacterial issues aside, I cannot imagine changing out my brush water every day. Hell, I sometimes change it one or more times during a painting session just to avoid getting pigments in other colors...
