I did once see a website with an Ork Stompa made from a Mr. Potato head, that was pretty cool and Orky if you think about it.

The 2D printed Tyranid army is funny; I might let that one swing once or twice for somebody new/returning to see if they wanted to invest in the army, but after that no way. I'm pretty lenient with proxies within reason, especially if somebody is new or coming back to the game because it's a pretty heavy investment to just buy whatever you want.

As long as they are models its fine for me. The printed ones look fine in my opinion. But cardboard and coke even for me stretches it unless there is a good reason.

But if its just a kid I let em do anything as im not gonna be the jerk to tell them to spend more. But an adult id kinda at least find out why before I made a decision.

But 3rd party models I prefer over GW ones so I dont even consider it proxying. So my policy is, have a good reason please.

It would be interesting to hear both sides of the story. Obviously cardboard doesn't come in rhino shaped packages most of the time so the opponent must have put in some effort here, which makes me wonder if perhaps he also put more effort into his 'drop pods' than simply placing a bottle of cola on the table.

Perhaps he is only just starting to get into the scratch building aspect of the hobby and these models are his very first pieces of work. If this is the case I would be very disappointed if he came across this thread and felt dissuaded from continuing with scratch building and refining his skills/tools/materials.

A lot of posters say they'd refuse to play card rhinos on principle. What about these?
Spoiler:

On the right we have an attempt to create a copy of the original rhino scaled up to the current rhino height. On the left is a vehicle (made from the old white dwarf article that taught how to make ork vehicles from card) that got broken down and rebuilt as a vindicator counts as (a few finishing touches still required).

Sure, they aren't great, but I like to use them as I made them. I always take a spare rhino and vindicator with me and check my opponent is okay with them before we start, otherwise I use the old 'official' models instead.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Regarding the printed cutout Tyranid army, well, at least it's in full color, right?
Also, what would you say if I busted out my old Ork Dreadnought card cutout from the 2nd Edition 40K starter set? It is an official GW "model," right?

Certainly, there are unacceptable extremes to proxying, but I think some people don't realize how good they have it with GW today where there is a model for everything. I still remember the days of PVC pipecap droppods (that were even featured in White Dwarf!) because there were no models for them.

Honestly I'm going to do this for an army, I personally don't really see any problems with them. Besides being a bit thin they are the same height, nicely painted, and almost everything is WYSIWYG. As for the original topic I would play against someone who proxied coke bottles and cardboard boxes as long as they are consistent and are willing to write everything down so that there are no debates mid way through the game on what is what. I don't really understand why so many people have problems with proxies, but perhaps this is a difference in culture more than anything else.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

I stated in my first post the custom built titan stuff was beautiful. Those two tanks are good. I'd play them no doubt.
The drop pods were literally 20 oz coke bottles with the label peeled off. Cap was still one that's how I knew it was coke.
His rhinos were a couple million notches below what you showed a pic of.
Those are seriously outstanding nicely done sir. I wouldn't have posted this if that had been the case.

I love that Nid paper army. I want it! Can't get much clearer than that and I dont have to guess a thing. LOVE IT! I need to make me one of those even tho I have have around 10k of Nids and can field most anything.

I'll play vs dice, cardboard, shoe boxes, lipstick tube men, but I am going to ask you to label each one with what they are and what they have if it isn't evident.

I want a clear label so I am not guessing the whole game. I tend to give leeway b/c I know some really poor people who don't play 40k b/c of cash. I'd let them play w/ clearly labeled match sticks on pennies for bases. Better tape a paper to him tho so i know what is what. They can even come to my house see what I have and make lists off those and I'll bring their list.

That Potato Head stompa is what i love about 40k. The genius of soem proxies is amazing... I want to play against ....

Printout paper Nid army looks great! Not only would I play against/with it I would congratulate the person on finding a neat way to cut costs instead of being the elitist jerk that feels entitled to refuse to allow someone to play with my special little precious toys that are overpriced and are not actually special or meaningful in any way. Seriously. The 40k player base is awful. Neckbeards kept me out of this hobby for decades.

So. Maybe OP coke bottle and card board guy is poor and just likes the game. Maybe he wants to test to see if 40k is any fun. But nah, dont interact with people on a human level and ask questions or offer to let them borrow a legit army. Just keep that winning attitude of Alpha Gamer going strong!

I WANT ONE!!!

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

Or maybe that person places a lot of value on the narrative and visual aspects of the game, things that aren't satisfied very well by playing with a bunch of cardboard boxes and paper cutouts. And I wouldn't blame them, 40k is an awful game when you just consider the rules, the only reason to ever play it is the awesome models. Take that away and you might as well play a better game instead.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Lobbywatson: fair enough, I'm glad you've cleared that up.

I actually think I'd prefer facing that tyrannid army compared to a bunch of proxies using the wrong models. For me it is a very close facimile of the correct visual appearance of what I should be seeing, but I can understand why many won't like it. I'm now actually tempted to make a couple of sets of armies done in this way (print outs glued double sided onto mounting card and laminated for protection) for use as skirmish armies on the go (holidays, not club gaming). Magnets could be used to secure the cut outs to crude bases covered in textured spray during play, but allows flat packing the 'models' away!

Meh. Narratives are for people who enjoy using poorly written rules. Games are meant to be played and the game pieces are simple representations of what the rules state they are.

I also used to be afraid of neckbeards before I started 40k, but I am now into the hobby for several years, and I have yet to see a single neckbeard. Most 40k players are really cool guys.
But 40k is more than a game. 40k is primarily a modelling and painting hobby. You can't go into a modelling hobby with coke bottles and expect people to accept that. You are supposed to be creative and put work into your collection. That is why you see people accepting well-made creative proxies, but not simple cardboard and bottles. Using such proxies is just plain offensive.
If you just want to play a game, but do not have models; you should not pick 40k, you should pick a nice board game instead. 40k has no right to exist beyond the nice miniatures; nice miniatures are primary element of 40k; you can't take them away.

I have seen a game where one of the players plunked Leggo men on the table with Battle Tech suits as sergents and heavy weapons troops. It changed from turn to turn what the heavy weapons were.
He was tabled by turn three.
