okay, recently been thinking over 40k as a beginner and im taking a interest in the Iron hands instead of Black Templars but I can't find much on tactics used or specific play styles or doctrine used by iron hands players so I thought I might as well come out and pose the question on how they play or am I missing something big here on why no one plays them?

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
A lot of people didn't play them in 5th Ed as they had no unique character or way of differentiating them from a standard codex list. Now they've got their own Chapter Tactics, there has been a surge in IH players.
The IH Chapter Tactics lend themselves very well to a couple of things:
Beatstick HQs: With IWND and FNP (6+) on characters, a biker Chapter Master is amazingly tough and fast, give him the Shield Eternal and a Thunder Hammer or Burning Blade and you've got one of the hittiest generic HQ units in the game. 200+ points of pure face-wrecking goodness.
Mechanised Warfare: IWND helps the survivability of their vehicles massively, making Rhino spam alongside other vehicles a good option. Run Clan Rukaan supplement and get even more techmarines to repair them.
March of the Ancients: Take a MOTF, add up to 6 Dreadnoughts in your list. Not the most effective in purely competitive terms, but there's something to be said IWND Ironclad Dreads in a pod. This style is also fluffy and cool as hell.
Hope that helps.

I'm looking at starting a marine army that isn't biker oriented. Anyone know of any good tactics guides out there?

Smashf***erstar with chaplain, commandsquad on bikes with apothecary,4 gravguns and 3 stormshields, if you got the points toss in the tempered helm to reroll ones in shooting (reason i repainted my BT into iron hands)
If you don't feel like biker armybuild, IWND landraiders, 6 ironclad dreadnoughts without motf... AV over T, HP over W...

I watched a guy run six squads of scouts (5 men each), using iron hands chapter tactic. Along with some predator, land speeder support. Funny to watch his opponents get frustrated with all the extra saving throws.

Just played against IH Terminators. By the emperor, those things would not die. Near as bad GK Paladins with Apothecary but cheaper. And that a Landraider with IWND is just stupid hard to kill.

I was tempted to start linking into terminators or into centurions since iv seen each bombing around in a land raider then getting out and hitting with a massive amount of firepower

do you mean two dreads with assault cannons or one dread with two assault cannons? I don't think a dread can take two assault cannons at once...might be wrong

One dread, it was a forgeworld unit I believe.

THAT THING WOULD NOT GO DOWN.
We tabled them but it took us until turn 5 to put the Mortis down...he's just cutting us to ribbons in his vengeance...it was ridiculous.

Iron Hands armies tend to use a lot of vehicles to make the most out of IWND, and nearly always have this guy because beating Abaddon's face in or bringing down a Scythed Heirodule Bio-titan in assault with a generic HQ is hilarious.

14 actually, you can also put on a cyclone missile launcher.
If you stand still you get skyfire and interceptor.
For some insane reason the regular contemptor can get BS5 but the Mortis can't because a grand total of one and two thirds rending hits on average is clearly unstoppable. But Forgeworld has a bad habit of overreacting to fan outcries for nerfs (see how the Hades breacher drill went from the admittedly overpowered large blast S10 AP1 melta pieplate of doom on arrival to getting a grand total of d3 meltahits on a small blast and dying if it can't clear the way) so eh.
On the plus side it gets a 5++ against shooting and a 6++ against assault.
The regular contemptor can mount a typhoon missile launcher on it's back without sacrificing it's close combat ability, and benefits from WS5 and better arm guns (you get all your usuals plus the plasma blaster which gives you 2 plasma shots at 18'' per arm, or the graviton gun which passes out an AP3 blast that autoglances vehicles and forces targets to take a strength test or autodie and feth your wound count).
The Blood Angels also get their own with their own Dread options.
Also contemptors have a base of S7 and fleet.
Still no non-special character venerable contemptors or ironclad contemptors yet but given that the Contemptor is one of FW's best sellers I'd expect something soon.
The Iron Hands one of course; gets IWND on top of all of this to spite hull point strippers.
Probably one of the only melee walkers that can go toe to toe with some assaulty MCs like the carnifex.

And guess what killed the Mortis? Carnifexes!
I have yet to roll hits for close combat attacks with my fexes...I've either killed the units I charge with shooting,,,or shooting and Hammer of Wrath.
