Relic, maker of Dawn of War was also the maker of Homeworld and Company of Heroes. Why not make a game based on Battlefleet Gothic?

Because of contracts I guess. It would make sense for Relic to make a BFG game, but it ultimately depends if GW gives them the license. Or rather, gives SEGA (I think they own Relic now) the license, since they are in charge.

Because Relic has integrity and didn't want to make a Homeworld clone for a third-party IP, maybe?

Didn't DoW2 use the same engine and mechanics as Company of Heroes?

A proper Battlefleet Gothic video game that stays true to the style and spirit of the tabletop game would be awesome.
I'm just not sure any developer could really pull it off without changing it too much into being a different game altogether.

Woooohooo! You see, I was going to go out and have some drinks with my pals tonight. Not anymore To the OP - The way I see it, a proper BFG game would be closer to what the Starfleet Command 1 & 2 games were, niche games with a loyal yet limited player base. Problem is, licenses tend to be on the costly side of things nowadays, and that doesn't quite mix with niche gaming - studios tend to be conservative and stick to best selling formulas in order to better make their money back. Franchised games that are not cookie-cutter first or third person shooters are an extremely rare sight.

From the other perspective though, GW has stopped supporting BFG.
I understand why studios wouldn't go out on a limb for a new gamestyle, new IP, engine, all that stuff. But BFG already has the mechanics, game design, artwork, etc, all worked out. Imagine it as a quality mobile game, you make a move, then your buddy makes a move when he gets a chance.
Homeworld 2 is over 10 years old now, and was widely regarded as a great game. We should have a high quality BFG game, instead of this trash < http://www.beastsofwar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Storm-of-Vengeance-1.jpg>

Aaaah, but the mobile games market has rules of their own. Long story short, everyone's looking for the next Flappy Bird or Candy Crush, basically games you can play in your ten-minutes visit to the loo. In that sense, the game you linked, while a letdown for fans of the franchise who perhaps expected more, is perfectly suited for its media
I agree, though, that 40k deserves better than a mobile plants vs zombies reskin. It's just that BFG prescribes a gaming style that may not have the mass appeal a licensed game requires to be financially successful (or at least to persuade investors). I hoped that the success of X-COM would spark an interest in strategy titles again, maybe even convince big studios that strategy games are not necessarily synonymous with financial ruin, but it seems I was wrong. Strategy, for now, is confined to indies. And sadly these lack the bargaining power to take on big licenses such as Trek, Star Wars or even 40k.
However, there may be good news incoming for 40k computer gaming. Did you see Bioware's Casey Hudson's tweets on the studio's latest project? He just dropped two words: Space Nuns... Now, I'm a deluded 40ker who thinks his zealous flamethrower ladies are the only space nuns in the universe. It probably isn't a 40k game. But what if it was?

I wouldn't want a ship-to-ship turn based game, that'd be pretty silly. But 40k-inspired ship-to-ship combat? Count me in!

Same engine I'm pretty sure, but the mechanics were different. They definitely learned from game to game - Company of Heroes builds on Dawn of War, and Dawn of War 2 builds on Company of Heroes - but it wasn't a reskin or anything of the sort. Same engine doesn't matter that much though - after all, Fallout 3 and Civilization 4 both use the Gamebryo engine, and you'd be hard pressed to find two more divergent games.
Considering Relic made Homeworld it always seemed like almost too obvious a choice for them to make a BFG game, but I always hoped.

Man I would love that. GW seem to be scared now of giving a license to a company in case it flops.
