All in the Rulebook Allies Matrix...

They are also Allies of Con to Necrons in IA12 from FW

I think what you are reading on the forums is that Necrons do not NEED allies.

They have everything covered or at least balanced (or even undercosted) in points to make up for their weaknesses ie low Initiative but deadly melee capabilities (Warscythes, MSS, Spyders and Wraiths)

A Necron Dark Harvest army from Imperial Armoury 12 and normal Necrons can be allies of convenience. They are allowed to ally with Blood Angels, because they did ally with them at some point.

It's also been established that some Necrons are actually diplomatic.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

The necrons are incredibly prejudiced and imperialistic to a T in the old sense. All other life exists to be conquered or destroyed by the Necrons. They do not even believe in gods in the religious sense anymore; for they have destroyed two species of them wholesale already. And despite this, the Necrons will work with others.

Many are interested in conquest rather than extermination. Rather than purging those who dwell on the worlds they conquer, they make them citizens of their dynasty. Inferior to good and proper thinking Necron nobles of course, but Necron classism is species blind. These may be made to fight for their new overlords, sometimes perhaps even willingly if the Necrons feel like treating them well.

Other times, the Necrons will make alliances of convenience if they deem it worth the time and effort of treating with lesser creatures. Only the Eldar are not treated with; for if the Eldar claim to be the inheritors of the Old Ones, then they can kindly go fall into the same ditch the Old Ones are currently residing in and die. The feeling is mutual; the Necrons are the ancient foe, the Eldar's raison d'ĂȘtre. The Tyranids are also not treated with because the Tyranids do not care to ally; everything is food or a means/obstacle to food. In addition, the Tyranids would destroy everything. Even Chaos can be simply waited out or avoided by leaving the galaxy until it burns itself out. The Tyranids will eat the entire universe and leave the Necrons with nothing to rule over or conquer. And that is unacceptable.

Even the Orks can be bargained with despite also being children of the old ones. Sure they're uncouth savages and would have never been without the workings of the hated Old Ones, but the Orks don't give a damn about their legacy and to a Blood Axe; any bag of sharp teef or pile o' gunz is as good as any other.

Chaos is full of pretentious upstarts angry at another bunch of pretentious upstarts. In the long run, Chaos has no place in the Necron vision of a universe that bows to them and then alone, but in the short term they may be useful.

Even the humans and tau are useful in a pinch to a scheming overlord or phaeron, even if they delude themselves with visions of self importance.

Or you could go the lazy route and say "Mindshackle scarabs."
