Subject: How to use allies effectively?

I have been playing 40k for several years but have never really gotten on board the allies train. Looking at lists it seems they are quite popular. What is the best way to use them effectively? I have IG, SM, CSM and a small amount of daemons (bloodletters and a bloodthirster) and an inquisitor. I tried once to ally the daemons with some khorne based CSM with Kharn but got destoryed horribly. I guess I am just not sure how to use allies and am looking for some tips or some examples of good builds or combos, thanks!

Well, an ally detachment usually comes with a tax in form of an HQ.
CSM and Daemons have some synergy. In particular, a Bloodthirster and some troops can complement a CSM force pretty well.
The same holds for IG and one of the following: SM, CSM, and Daemons.

So what about these inquisitorial detachments? I read somewhere they don't have a tax.

Really allies are used to shore up your weaknesses, or give you access your army doesn't usually have access to. Such as FMCS for CSM. Adding in IG hydras to help with anti-air. That sort of thing.

I use allies as a diversion. I find my (currently) Pod-less Marines survive a lot longer when there is a Riptide to distract people's guns.

It's dumb I know but If I were to ever use allies I'd keep it as fluffy as possible. Having Eldar and Orks on the same team would bug me.

Pretty much allies is the following:
1) add tau - we make everything better
2) add eldar - we make everything better
3) add tau to eldar - wonder twin powers unite in the form of Brokeness
4) add a prescience inquisitor and 3 servo skulls - because assault armies are broke (/sarc) and we need to protect the gunlines of numbers 1&2
5) Play a fluffy mix of something on the allies chart not listed above and spend 6 turns picking up models; as your opponent sneers at you the whole time believing he is some kind of tactical genius for playing something listed above.

This is painfully true on way too many levels...

Except that Eldar/Dark Eldar is far far stronger.

You mean precisely one build of Eldar/Deldar is far stronger.
EDIT: A mighty TWO! builds are stronger. . .

Those two builds destroy taudar and eldau. You are wrong. Don't backpedal and make yourself look more foolish.
Denying that Eldar/ DE is the most powerful combination in the game is silly. Beasts and Seers are by far the two most dominant lists in the game.
