On Thursday, the network announced their replacement for outgoing "Late Show" host David Letterman. Stephen Colbert, whose satirical "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central competes in the same time slot, has landed the sought-after gig.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement released by CBS. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead."

He added, "I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Epic. Will the Colbert Report still be running, or will they be shifting his enitre show over top Lettermen?

It will be a shift; the Colbert Show will end next year.

It'll be interesting to see someone playing a character be the new late show personality. But then again they need something like it to compete with Fallon who likely kept all of the leno fans and added his own considerable fan base to it.

You think Leno fans stayed with Fallon? Aren't his ratings pretty bad so far?

It's great but sad at the same time since I don't know how much of Colbert's character will be able to transition over into the Late Night Show.

He leads the late night shows, and is doing well.

I don't think Colbert is going to transfer the 'character' over to The Late Show, but will probably just be himself at this point.

Ok thanks for the info.

I don't know what to think... I don't know if people will like his 'not character' or not or how he will be without one.

Colbert is a cool guy, sad to see letterman go though.

Well I shall miss the Report, but even the good things must end

I wouldn't be surprised if he maintained his character (or maybe a much lighter form). I mean, he testified before Congress in character.

Yeah, honestly I like Colbert in his interview with Oprah where he is just himself but I don't think I'd watch a show with him hosting it. I'd assume they are buying the personality.

Plus he's made some great tv moments in character and his handling of breaking down campaign finance so anyone could see how the system gets cheated was pretty amazing. I'd be sad to see the character go.

Yeah, there were touting that it was the highest the Tonight Show had been in a long time once he came on. And since they are still advertising it that way I'd assume his numbers were holding.

So we have our first look at a "non-Colbert Show" Colbert:

Boo. I like the Colbert report, but have zero interest in the late show or Colbert outside the "Colbert" character. This kind of a bummer all around.

I have a similar viewpoint but I am interested in Colbert outside of his "Stephen Colbert" character.

I think Stephen Colbert (the real one) is an extremely talented and funny man but I couldn't care less about major network late night talk shows.

To be fair, they did point out it was written 17 years ago so obviously not when he was at the apex of his game like he is now.

It's amazing how the glasses turn him into a different person in my mind.

He's superman!
