ok so im starting a ravenwing army after playing a wraith elder army for awhile

first I guess I'm wondering are ravenwing even competitive???

if so how should I start?? like what units should I buy first

should I buy sammael

or get Azrael and ally imperial guard for anti air and mass infantry for cheap??

Ravenwing are played a lot like white scars bike armies. And your point limit dictates how you divert from the formula. Here is how I would do 1000pts of ravenwing:

Sammy on corvus jetbike
Ravenwing bike teams each with 1 plasma gun an a mm attack bike
Land speeder typhoons
1 dark shroud
1 vengeance

Ravenwing can be competitive in a sense. I wouldn't dare take ravenwing to adepticon or games day and expect to be champ.
But say at my local store with a few dozen players and a league yea y not.

The idea is to use your bikes to thrash him on turn one, on turn two your speeders are in range and now you can bust tanks and break concentrated blobs with invuls and fnp with pieplates and sustained energy weapon spam.

In bigger point games a Libby and command squad are never a bad idea. A chaplain on a bike is situationally useful as well if you know your walking into a fight with a naturally cc strong army like orks for example.

Knights also become more useful and taking more speeders too.

If you know your going to see airbornes take an aegis line and a devestator team with heavy weapons to smack them out of the sky.

Ravenwing can be a fun and effective army. They are hardly the competitive powerhouse of the sm forces but they do alright.

Also if you feel your vengeance isn't working out swap it for more bikes or a speeder with a weapon you think will do well.

Ravenwing also pairs great with white scar bikes and blood Angel assault marines and preds

Of course you can compete with a ravenwing list. Just showing up and rolling dice means you can compete. Unless, did you mean is it extra easy win button to play ravenwing? Then no.

The best place to start is eBay. Ravenwing bikes are part of the DV set, so are stupid cheap to buy from the internet. Just convert one into Sammael and buy a codex, and you'll be good to go.

Ok so if I wanted a bike speeder army would regular space marines be a better option??

My meta is a lot of power gamers sadly and I'm just trying to use my space marines. So would a ravenwing army or let's say white scars army work better??

I mean ravenwing have black knights but I guess bikers can take plasma guns or Grav guns right?

it's a bit of a trade really. We can get the plasma storm battery as well as the darkshroud and our bikes can carry the plasma talon (black knights) which is a bike mounted plasma gun. At the cost of no grav guns.

The trick to beating ravenwing is basically get off the ground or get dug in garrison troops in fortifications and grow a pair of wings and ravenwing are all but neutralized. The tzeentch flying circus for example will feth you up. As would a tau gunline in a map with plentiful amounts of good cover in his deployment zone

Also eldar cheesy bike armies can be annoying.

I don't see why you couldn't. The models are the same the only difference is colour.
