I am a member and I have to say that it is a great art site and a great site for any who is an aspiring artist or just loves art. For some reason most of the references to the site are about a minority of members who are Nazis or bronies.

because everything that isn't Warmachine or something better than GW is bad... lol

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc.

Where did you get your idea?

I've never heard anything about Deviant Art's reputation on this site. I've been a member of DakkaDakka and of DeviantArt for years.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I use Deviant Art for my sculpting portfolio.

They have a messaging system in addition to the comments that works very well for feedback and communicating with potential clients.

It's also less expensive and time-consuming than having a dedicated website.

As the above several posters mention, I have been a member of Dakka for a long time and never seen anything negative about Deviant Art here. I'm sure you saw something, but it is by no means a prevalent opinion on this site, imo.

That's some good mental gymnastics there. Trying to make a supposed site wide dislike of Deviantart to be about how the site also (supposedly) hates GW.

You should try out for the Olympics with moves like that.

Yeah I've been on deviantArt for over 5 years, and since I've been here I've seen no negative comments on it. If anyone here is on dA also, I'd recommend checking out the GW group on there, its recently getting an overhaul (its not official GW of course) But you can find some great painted models on there, and the member is doing a good job getting discussions going, and even dedicating journal entries to the new members each week.

Deviant Art isn't very known as site with high quality work most of the time. Especially on the category I work in (Graphic Design). Press search and there always seem to be piles of microsoft paint works and [insert weird stuff here.]

So I'm not sure about the models area of dA but some parts of dA makes my eyes cry blood.

Perhaps this is just brilliant marketing. How many people ventured over to DA after reading this thread?

Deviant Art is a website where anyone can post their artwork. This means there are some excellent artists who may post some great artwork, paintjobs, sculpts, or what have you. However, for every one of them there's a couple hundred thousand people who post furry porn, pregnant fetish art, Sonic the Hedgehog fanart, Original Character Don't Steal-levels of stuff, and all sorts of other garbage. The community there trends towards younger users, and as a result you have a lot of unskilled people using less than ideal tools to make their artwork. I used it a bit in high school, but most serious artists I know have completely abandoned it.

Check out my Youtube channel!

I have been on DA for years, and Dakka for a while, but I have never actually noticed this. Do you mean like negative references to users, or just the site in general?

I mean, if its users, you cant help that, or claim its a negative bias. If someone is a dick and has the charm and charisma of a Portuguese man o' war, you cant control what comes out of their mouths, nor whether or not they have a DA profile surely?

Considering that there's two threads in the DCM section just about art from deviantArt (and other places), one of which is one hundred and fifty nine pages long, perhaps its just that certain users have poor taste. =P

Oh, and talking about a particular user, I do reference one fellow as having interesting art, but being a total donkey cave (being a nazi feth head of course) at times. Though its been ages since I posted a piece of his art here.

Oh look. Shock value, just for the sake of the shock.

Deviant Art is bad ass. This particular subject is one of my all time favorites.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

It really depends what you search for. There are plenty of respectable artists. But like any place on the internet, there will inevitably be some rubbish stuff. Plus don't forget rule 34. And besides, on deviantart you can enable the feature to not show mature content, so you won't see it in your searches. Sadly there's no filter for Pony and Sonic OCs xD But to be honest, there's more quality stuff on there than bad stuff.

Yeah, I've never heard anything bad about deviantart on here beyond complaints of Rule 34 and My Little Pony. Beyond that, I don't think there's some general anti-DA community on Dakka.

For what it's worth, one thing that Deviantart is good for is finding stock reference photos. Always nice to have a resource like that when the roommates are out and unable to pose.

This is very true. About the only reason I ever browse deviantart anymore is for stock images. You can find just about anything.

DCMs seem to have the opposite opinion as Wyrmalla stated. I don't browse it, but then again, I do most of my browsing on someone else's time, therefore I try to avoid hang ups with the work filter.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I often refer people there when looking for artists on the cheap. Lots of talented people mixed in the sea of not quite so talented. Many of them do work or are looking to do work professionally.

Regarding stock photos for different poses, consider

http://www.photo-reference-for-comic-artists.com/

And their sister sites (3d.sk and the like...careful, you will see nipples and other parts at 3d.sk).

I went ahead and started paying for them since it is handy to see poses from 360 degrees as opposed to just a few different angles.

But "doubtful"... it was right there just waiting for you

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
