Hi Dakkanauts,

Welcome to my Imperial Marines project log. This project started in part because of the changes that the new AM/IG codex brought to my other project, the Holy Terra Special Operations Company. I wanted a special forces type of list which the IG codex no longer offers. The SM codex, however, does a great job of it. So, I present to you, the Imperial Marines of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

The Fluff
Spoiler:
The Chapter was secretly founded by the Adeptus Mechanicus. It was created using the original gene-seed of the Primarchs, initially crafted in the 30th Millennium by the Emperor himself, and collected from the tithes due to Mars. Strand by strand, the genetic material was spliced and diced so that only the best of the best made it into the chapter's own gene-seed. Some believe that the Chapter's origins date back to the First Founding, and the mysterious 2nd and 11th Legions, records of which are missing or deleted from Imperial records, and that it was the Mechanicus itself that erased all such reports. Although primarily a private army of the Fabricator-General and the Fabricator Locum, there are several other duties that the Chapter is tasked with, including without limitation:

  • Guardians of the Mars Genetorium: The Genetorium of Mars provides a list of all plants and animals that are either on a planet or will be introduced to a planet to make it habitable by Mankind. A Genetorium also plays a vital role in the Inquisitions activities, however, the Chapter is known to work with or without the sanction of the Inquisition. As such, the Chapter's duties also extend to searching for genetic impurities in baseline human populations, the hunting down of dangerous human mutants and rogue psykers, and even eliminating entire chapters of space marines for the smallest impurity in their gene-seed.

  • Guardians of the Librarium: All of the knowledge in the Imperium is stored in the vast Librariums of Terra and Mars. It is the duty of the Chapter to safeguard these repositories of knowledge.

  • Guardians of the Pure Astartes: All Space Marine Chapters are expected to pay a tithe of 5% of their gene-seed every year to the Adeptus Mechanicus so that the Mechanicus' Tech-priests can monitor the health of each of the Chapters and facilitate the Founding of new Chapters from existing gene-seed lines whenever the High Lords of Terra decree that the Imperium has a need for new Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes.

  • The Marines of the Chapter are strict adherents to the Cult Mechanicus. However, they are also devout believers that the Emperor of Mankind is the flesh incarnation of the Omnissiah. As a result, the Chapter also shows an unwavering devotion to the Imperium of Man. It is for this reason, and this reason alone, that the Inquisition tolerates their existence. The Chapter subscribes to a faction known as the Organicists, who see biological enhancement using genetic engineering as equal to the more common cybernetic enhancements. The amount of biological and cybernetic augmentation found in the Chapter is unparalleled resulting in the finest warriors inside and outside the Imperium. Indeed, they are literally custom-built for the battlefield. Even the lowest Marines receive a wide range of enhancements including without limitation:

  • Bionic limbs and organs, which may replace the originals because of an accident or simply because they provide enhanced capabilities or cater to the special needs that the user may face in scientific research or in battle;

  • Bionic eyes, which allow the Marine to see beyond the normal spectrum of vision, augment or alter electromagnetic input to allow night vision or heat vision, and zoom in to magnify an image;

  • Autosanguination, a process by which all the natural blood in a body is removed and replaced with a more efficient oxygen and waste-carrying synthetic chemical substitute, allowing for the easier healing of wounds and more effective immunological defence against disease and toxins;

  • Cortex Implants, which vary in function from simple memory circuit implants in the neurocortex intended to improve memory function to slim micro-cogitators that provide full computing abilities. Many senior Marines of the Chapter use smaller implants of this type to preserve their mind and memories from the ravishes of time, and to lessen their dependence on fragile flesh. Cortex Implants of good quality are very rare and hard to produce, but provide the Marine eidetic memory and heighten their intelligence and ability to consume and correlate large amounts of data. Among the oldest Marines of the Chapter only a few portions of the original brain tissue remain. The use of Cortex Implants is probably the primary reason why senior members live far longer than the rest of the elite of the Imperium and Mechanicum;

  • Electoos, metal circuits embedded in the epidermic skin of Marines to allow them to consciously channel the bioelectricity generated by their own bodies. These can be used in combat, or to revive a recalcitrant Machine Spirit.

  • Electro-grafts, which are similar to Electoos in that they are electric circuits embedded in the epidermic layer of the skin, but are distinct in their purpose. Electro-grafts serve as an interface for the Marine with electronic machinery, particularly sources of digital data like Cogitators (computers). Given the right data-sources, this allows a Marine with electro-grafts to acquire many skills and much specialist knowledge instantly;

  • Vox-casters and voice-synthesizers, which often replace the normal speech organs of more senior Marines of the Chapter . The main benefit of is that it allows the user to communicate in "Binary". Essentially, Binary consists of bursts of coded noise with a twittering quality that can be used as an extremely effective communication tool known only to other members of the Adeptus Mechanicus. It is often used to communicate sensitive issues in order to avoid the ever-prying eyes of the Inquisition. Additionally, it can be used as a means of datafile transfer;

  • The mind impulse unit is a direct neural link between the brain and a larger piece of external machinery allowing control by thought alone as if the machinery was a part of the body. Although these are most commonly found in massive pieces of technology such as Imperial Knights, Titans, and starships, Marines flying the Chapter's jetbikes, land-speeders, stormravens, and stormtalons also utilize this technology;

  • The Binary Cortex is created during an operation in which the brains of two Marines are joined in one body; and

  • The Rite of Pure Thought is an operation which replaces the brain's creative, emotional right half with a digital Cogitator (computer). This frees the marine of any remaining emotion.

  • The "original" OP
    Spoiler:
    So it begins.

    It will definitely be a home brew chapter. I'm not really sure of the specifics yet though. I want them to fit with the fluff for my guard, the Holy Terra Special Operations Company, so a Holy Terra theme will be in there with a lot of influence from Mars and the Adeptus Mechanicus. I like the sound of something like "Imperial Marines". I just need to read about the Imperial Fists, and think about how not to step on their toes with the whole "defenders of terra".

    The flight crews are provided by the adeptus mechanicus.

    To start off, I decided to get right to work on my first HQ choice. This army is going to be all about speed, and more specifically, airspeed. I wanted to be sure that this is captured in all unit choices in the army. Combining this with the Adeptus Mechanicus theme, I busted out a Master of the Force with a conversion beamer on a jetbike. He still needs a little gap filling and general tidying up, but I am quite happy with how it turned out.

    That's a gun from a Necron Spyder. I'd considered using them with my tau but I wasn't sure about scale. This helps. This is an interesting project. My only advice would have been to shelve the Master until you have some troopers done. Designs tend to evolve a bit as you do an army and HQ guys should be saved for a little later on.

    Thanks Azazelx! bossfearless has it, it's half of the particle beamer from the canoptek spyder kit. I just threw it on top of the middle part of a jetpack. I am just hoping that it doesn't look 'too' necron-like.

    As for doing the HQ first, I suppose you are right, bossfearless. I've been planning this SM project for quite some time though, and always knew I that I wanted to do a MotF on a jetbike. I am working on some of the troopers this week, but if I get a new concept idea for another HQ, I will definitely do it up!

    Thanks RileyJessup! I don't have any big plans for them, apart from a bunch of magnets and head swaps, so hopefully they won't disappoint.

    Finally got the first squad done up. The bodies are magnetized in the arm joints, as well as in one of the feet. So far I only did the shotties and a powersword/bolt pistol on the sarge, but at some point I'll get around to doing the rest of the options. I had originally done a dry fit of the space marine heads on the scout bodies by chopping off the little knob on the bottom to avoid the "bobble head" look. However, after building the body and trying it out, I found that it gave the Marine a hunchback look, which isn't so cool either. So, I did a little experimenting, and finally decided to hollow out a top middle portion of the scout torso, to give the knob on the space marine head a little more room. I was very pleased with the end result.

    Also did up a bunch of fluff, many parts of which are shamelessly stolen from various places and adapted for my own use.

    Pretty much finished building and magnetizing the first speeder. I've opted to swap the standard clear base for a 60mm base, so I can keep the rest of the squad's bases underneath. I am holding off magnetizing them until I decide what exactly will be going on the bases. I am considering either a snow theme, or an urban theme, or a combination of both. The plus side of using a snowy theme is that it will match my IG army once I get around to building myself a table. The magnet on one of the benches is a little bit bigger, as it will need to support both the squaddie and his base, as only four of the bases fit comfortable on the 60mm base underneath.

    Now, I also wanted to be able to use these as standard speeders if I want to, just by removing the squaddies. So, I magnetized a weapon mount in the standard spot, as well as an underslung one, which can go just below the cerberus launcher, or as the cerberus launcher is also magnetized, directly beneath the hull.
