BOSTON (AP) — Police say they've taken a man into custody in connection with two unattended backpacks found at the Boston Marathon finish line.
Police spokesman Dave Estrada says the backpacks were discovered Tuesday evening, a year after two bombs in backpacks exploded at the end of the marathon and killed three people.
The bomb squad is checking the backpacks found Tuesday. Police have cleared the area. Trains are bypassing the nearby Copley Square station. The police department has tweeted asking people to avoid the area.
Survivors, first responders and relatives of those killed in last year's Boston Marathon bombing marked the anniversary Tuesday with tributes. Former Mayor Thomas Menino (meh-NEE'-noh) spoke at the nearby Hynes Convention Center.
So. Think they'll find anything? Huge overreaction that belongs on the blooper reel?

Given the anniversary I can understand why action was taken. I just hope that we are not seeing a copycat

Quick, decisive action. Hopefully it's nothing, but multiple backpacks for one guy on the anniversary? It's fishy and deserves an investigation.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Trains bypassing a nearby station? Im no expert at explosives, but what do they expect to find, back pack sized military-grade eperimental explosives that could level a block sized area?

If something does happen, you don't want 100-500 extra people exiting a train and making the area even more congested for police and emergency vehicles to get there.

What an ASS!
Are there laws about attempting to incite a panic (Yelling fire in a crowded movie theater), or whatnot?

Damn. Part of me was like "backpacks get left behind all the time, probably nothing" but I the news popped in my feed hours before I posted this thread and I figured it wouldn't take that long for the bombsquad to determine the presence of an explosive unless something serious was happening.
What kind of idiot makes a fake bomb and leaves it at the Boston Marathon? Maybe he likes prison

Same people who feel tweeting bomb threats to airlines after someone did it first. Imitation is the best form of flattery/have the government take care of your needs for the next few decades.

Is it a crime to create panic in this way (and waste resources of the police etc.) over in Boston?

Yes. It's a crime to call in a fake bomb threat and its a more serious crime to actually plant fake bombs.

Well some people have a strange sense of humour.
Or it could be some sort of an attention deficit.
Where i live, if someone did something like this they would get the bill for mobilising all the police, firemen, ambulances etc. on top of whatever else the court would decide.

A bomb scare is a crime in most Western countries, and a lot of others also

An overreaction? Yes.
But in case it would have been a real bomb, I think it is better that the government overreacts rather than underreacts in this scenario.
Of course, that is not always the case:

Leeuwarden mayor angry about sea mine April 1 joke
Monday 02 April 2012
Leeuwarden's mayor Ferd Crone told a news conference on Sunday he will do all he can to ensure the makers of a fake sea mine which was found floating in one of the city's canals on April 1 are tracked down.
The discovery of the mine on the Westersingel canal led to a 300m exclusion zone and residents being warned to keep windows and doors closed. Explosives experts were brought in and preparations were also taken to evacuate the area.
The mine turned out to be made of polystyrene. According to the Telegraaf, the emergency services considered from the start the mine may have been an April 1 joke but did not want to take any risks.
Costs
Crone says if the mine's makers are found, they will have to pay for the emergency operation.
Police in the town of Lochem in Gelderland have also begun an investigation into an April 1 joke. There, a suspicious package was left in front of a former synagogue which has now been turned into a cultural centre.
A number of people were evacuated before the package was revealed to be a fake bomb.

I think the hoaxters should be made to sit through a movie of actual terrorists attacks that illustrate the full level of carnage that ensues as well as a biography of some of the victims. Perhaps meeting some survivors of such an attack and be made to realize just how thoughtless what they did was.
Some, it might work for, anyway.
