Sometimes I really hate my state

http://money.cnn.com/2014/04/15/news/economy/oklahoma-minimum-wage-ban/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

(Been covered locally for a couple of weeks now, figured since it hit "national" media I would share)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Oklahoma cities and towns are banned from raising the local minimum wage under a new state law.

Gov. Mary Fallin signed the measure Monday. The new law also bars localities from requiring that employees receive a certain number of sick or vacation days, either paid or unpaid.

With legislation to increase the federal minimum wage stalled in Congress, proponents of a raise have turned their attention to states and cities. Several have recently approved increases to $10.10 an hour. That is the level supported by congressional Democrats and President Obama, who has urged local governments to act.

The Oklahoma law blocks that sort of move.

Critics of the bill say it was a direct response to a petition in Oklahoma City seeking to put a wage increase on the November ballot.

David Slane, a local criminal attorney who drafted the proposal, said the signature-gathering began a month ago and was already more than halfway to the approximately 10,000 signatures required for a spot on the ballot.

Organizers are deciding how to move forward. Slane said. They're weighing a challenge to the law's constitutionality or a statewide petition, which would require significantly more signatures.
Fallin, a Republican, said the law "protects our economy from bad public policy that would destroy Oklahoma jobs."

"Mandating a minimum wage increase at the local level would drive businesses to other communities and states, and would raise prices for consumers," she said in a statement. She has also opposed a federal increase to the minimum wage.

Of course the Republicans in this state who are always championing that "local government is best government" will most likely not see the problem with having a state government pass laws that prevents local government from making decisions.

Party of "less government" my ass...

By that logic cities/counties shouldn't be able to set their own tax rates either, because you will have rich/poor areas of a state.

And a statewide minimum wage doesn't prevent that anyway.

Up until the last decade we were a Conservative state, that elected Republican Presidents and ran a Democrat controlled state legislature. They were able to promote social welfare and sensible rules (Oklahoma Liberals are still conservative) based on what was best for the people in the state. Then Republicans took over, and now we are just terrible.

They can't even follow the simplest constitutional rule of the state: each bill can only be about one subject. They keep on passing bills that cover a bunch of different things, only to watch them get struck down. Now they want to change the constitution because they are to dumb to realize that they have to write two bills if they want to raise fees for one thing while also making something else illegal.

Runnin up on ya.

The law was created in response to an initiative in Oklahoma City to raise the minimum wage in the city above the state minimum.

The city initiative was only needed because the legislature is too busy giving the five rich people in the state tax breaks to address the plight of the poor.

I hate my state.

Not really. The entire state's economy is fairly depressed; in fact a fair number of people who live in the boonies either are earning mineral rights money from oil/natural gas or work in the petroleum industry and earn respectable wages..

I can see arguments both ways. Not sure why the state government should care though. A libertarian will argue it should be left to the lowest competent local government if at all.

Okay. Cool.

This bill doesn't pass the smell test really... are your elected officials that daft?

Question: Are the local Unions pushing for minimum wage increase recently? Generally speaking, Union contracts has stipulations for automatic wage increases if the local minimum wages is upped.

EDITed for clarification.

You won't have to apologize if you refrain from saying something inappropriate when uninformed... food for thought.

In regards to the OP: it is more proof that Republicans are not the "party of less government" but more of the "party of less government... unless it is something we care about," which is what I have been saying here plenty of times before. Hopefully, it is struck down before it makes it any further.

I work three primary jobs. One full time, another a consultancy, and a third part time at a firearms store. The first two pay very well, the part time gig pays $8.75 (which reflects a 50 cent raise after 6 months). Not alot is expected of me there which is fine, I get a great discount and access to people looking for training, so this job works for all involved.
Minimum wage in the area is $7.25, so I am making over that. But again, it is an entry level post, it was never meant to be a job to provide a "living" wage. Raising minimum wage to what $10/hr and calling that a living wage is a joke, meant to garner some votes. It will lead to less jobs being offered at that level, and an increase in pricing to offset the increase in labor costs.

So this bill got defeated? Great! Let me set my own per hour rate with a potential employer, and stop screwing the little guy with laws that dont do anything but make the working man suffer.

It was actually directed to d-usa, to whom Ive already publicly apologized to. As to my bonifidas, check my last post, youll see I am in fact part of that minimum wage group for whom laws like this dont actually help.
