If you're not taking any allies, at least.

The way I see it, the ones from the Tempestus book have better orders, and are naturally scoring troops. The Militarum version is a lowly elite with worse orders, and neither use the old platoon rules for reserves.

So, the way I see it, there's no reason to use the Militarum version unless I'm missing something?

You get more storm troopers than in the Tempestus book, and they are still AP3. Besides, what else are you going to fill your elite slots with, Ratlings and Ogryns?

Good point about having less, although having 25 from the Tempestus book is only 5 short of the old codex and you actually have more openings for special weapons this way. (8 vs 6)

The senior officer AM orders are in many ways better than the MT dex orders. Tank hunters on 4 plasma guns in a scion command is brutal anti tank. Fire on my Target gives you the tasty ignores cover on those plasmaguns so your target cannot block your shots with bush.

The junior officer orders are good but probably slightly worse than the MT dex ones. FRFSRF is also the best way to increase the hot shot lasgun damage. Forwards, for the Emperor also really helps spread your guys out after a DS so they have some way to survive and still get to shoot. It is a strange dichotomy where the MT command squad is a better orders machine but the AM command squad is a better plasma totting death machine when in range of a AM senior officer (not as difficult as you might think as vendettas can still tote CCS).

You also have to take a squad and a command squad. If you just want a single squad then the AM is the only way.

No relics, the only difference is scoring and orders.

Personally, I'd take them as IG, simply because FRF on hotshots is brutal, as is FOMT and BiD for a plasma command squad, and as mentioned above, Forward For The Emperor allows you to scatter after DS without losing your aplha-strike potential. The MT orders are nice, but having them able to recieve orders from other Officers (CCS/PCS/Yarrick) is also probably better than relying on 1 MT Command Squad for all your orders. If running them separate and the MT CS is taken out, you've got no cabability to issue orders to the Scions, and as such, the CS will be such a fire magnet it will be destroyed ASAP by a competent opponent.

In the AM book, I find there are plenty of options for scoring, most of which are as durable (or moreso) as what will be a maximum of 20 T3 4+ troops in an allied detachment. I see Stormtroopers as purely aggressive units, and if they're sitting objectives, they aren't going after targets, defeating the purpose of them. You're better off using them to open a second front or launch a precise assault (depending on numbers) that aims to cripple the opponent's scoring/killing potential rather than capture a position.
