The pistoliers are a bit too youthful and fresh faced for my liking. I'm after something in a hardened, embittered and gruff appearance ideally.

The scion heads are allowed, being GW and all. However since I'm using those for veterans I was looking for a more rough and ready looking guardsmen. The plan is for the veterans to look like the proffesionals they are with the helmeted or beret'd heads, and a rougher more beat up looking standard guardsmen.

Brettonian and Militia heads are well worth a look the militia kit in particular is one of my favourite GW kits

Righty!
The heads are now on the veteran squads since my second set of Scion bits have arrived to finish off what I have so far.
Currently I'm at:
Command Squad (either grenade launcher + autocannon, or 4 flamers)
10 Veterans (camo cloaks, 2 grenade, 1 disruption blaster, autocannon)
10 Veterans (carapace, 3 flamers, taurox)
2 Sentinels (scout, autocannons)
Primaris Psyker
Inquisitor and 4 Henchmen.
I have also salvaged a chimera for my command team, and ordered in a pair of wyverns and an armoured sentinel to add to the force.
I played my first campaign game yesterday at 500 points vs a Daemon force. Despite suffering at the hands of the warp storm multiple times (5/6 of my units got hit by nurgle first turn), I managed to pull a win while only losing 2 Veterans, the command team and the Taurox (and 2 acolytes) whilst tabling the opponent.
And for campaigns sake here's a fluffy report:
---- Access Granted ----
-- Inquisitorial Files: Hades Gate Campaign --
-- System: REDACTED –
Comms Log Accessed: Veteran Sergeant Devrail broadcasting from hive world REDACTED
This is Veteran…. Ail, Artician 2nd Recon. We’ve taken the mining depot due north of the startport.... we approached under the cover of night under the command of Officer Yuriel Tan… mining down deserted…. evidence of gun fire.
We took up position in the wrecked habitat units and took turns taking watch… something came at use just before sunrise… it wasn’t man or beast, some kin…. apparitions. Foul stinking beasts never grac…by the emperors light they came at use, bombarding us with hell fires.
The men did well… for every man we lost we slew many of their number, Mikhails Ice Dogslost their Taurox to enemy fire but managed to secure the comm…elay, bunkering down in the crater they slew anyone who came near.
Officer Tan and his command crew were found wanting, taking heavy loses from the enemy bombardment they withdrew from the field like cowards. My prayers go to the emperor that his sword or the enemy find them soon.
My own men held the command centre, taking up hidden positions amongst the rubble against enemy shelling. Again and again they came at us but every man proved his worth to the emperor as they picked off the abominations.
By sunrise we had cleansed their stench with the emperors light and have estabilished a forward command over looking the starport. Tell command we’re going to need more men to push against the starport, we will reclaim REDACTED.
Long live the Emperor
Long Live the Imperium
Long live the Frost Crows
-- Inquisitor Rayail Additions: Comissar Yarick – Drop the Hammer –
-- Commander Hamish dispatched to assume command of Artician 2nd Recon --
Pictures of the force thus far and a little progress coming soon

It's amazing how that headswap completely transforms the look of the basic Cadian.
Fantastic start. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with for your rank and file guardsmen.

Cheers, I prime white and work backwards from there, airbrushing low lights from various angles (visible along side of chimera, base of front and back, around rear door and by turret) and then use directed washes on cracks/crevices, before working my way back up to a cleaner white on the raised surfaces. Many many layers of GW white go into the higher surfaces.
