I know servo-skulls are used for message carrying, spying, and generally stuff to do with recon and utility but are there such things as Gun-skulls? Perhaps with a bolt pistol or some other form of close range weaponry to float around powing enemies or defending someone important.

Yes I think they show up now and again in the BL novels plus the Inquisitor game and I think Dark Heresy....

Maybe more a laser pistol, don't,t bolt pistols have bulky magazines given there calibre

Yeah, they are mentioned in an assassination attempt on Commissar Cain in one of his Books. They used Bolt Pistols and where hard to hit but they also they had to have a control skull radiating the signal other wise they collapsed.

In the newest Horus Heresy book from FW there's a mechanicum item that's basically a servo-skull with a gun, so yeah. (Its main function is still beacon/spying but eh)

There's all kinds of weapons you can stick into a skull. Las-based are the most-practical, given that you can just feed them power through whatever means powers the skull's other systems, but slug-throwers or flamers aren't out of the question.

Skulls are not pure tools, they are also the remains of previous Adepts that carry on (in a different way) their original mission. In the Chapias Cain book the Tech-Priests are chocked that anyone could use these sacred skulls for anything as mundande as weapons, and in a way that almost guaranteed them to be destroyed.
