Subject: All rounder armies?

I want to get back into 40k after a long break but everything has changed so much since i last played. I used to play space marines but I thought they were a bit boring. But anyways, what do you think is a good all rounder army in terms of shooting and close comebat. I was originally going to go tau but I realised that most the tim if they don't blow the opponents off the table they get wrecked in close combat. Also i would also likr the army to have a good track record in competitions but thats not imperative...

Space Wolves would jump out to me as the immediate obvious answer.
Nids have a lot of close-mid range shooting and nice assault capabilities as well.

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it. |

Well, I'd opt for Necrons with Annihilation Barges, Night Scythes and troops for shooting and DLord and Wraiths for cc.
They have a quite good tournament record.

Cc was nerfed in sixth edition, tau gun lines, especially with eldar allies do great. They also do well in tourneys.

Wonder how many friends you make seal clubbing?
Anyway I'd probably recommend imperial guard or csm. The ig's New codex just dropped and it's got lots of solid options. It has lots of solid battlefield assets and can dish it out as good as it gets it. Their cc isn't the best but it's tolerable
Csm is alot of the opposite. Their great in cc and have some good magic users and heavy firepower options. Their basic shooting leaves something to be desired however but it's possible to overcome and work around this. I think that if sm was off the table and I had to pick an army to start today. I'd take one of those two

The new Imperial Guard codex actually isn't that bad in CC. You won't find yourself murdering your way through the entire enemy army, but when the time is right they can pull off some truly breathtaking charges with their blobs, and can also fight quite stubbornly in defensive close combats.

Space marines?
Lots of troop choices and options to use + good durability so can take some fire to bring down tougher targets.
They have a good range in tanks, now anti air, artillary and other versions

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

They've actually been doing a pretty good job of rounding out codices over the past few years. The idea that a codex is really good at one thing and kind of crummy at everything else has been draining away. Armies are less schtick-ey than they were.
Less, but not none, of course. Tau still have nothing for close combat, and demons still struggle to do much shooting, but generally speaking, any army is capable of fielding a blend of long and short range firepower with some close combat thrown in.

I would suggest Dark Eldar, they have good shooting in splinter weaponry (VENOMS!) and Dark Lances (RAVAGERS!) as well as strong close combat units with good AP (INCUBI!) as well as survivable fast close combat units (BEASTPACK!). There is also something to be said for their gorgeous models and fun flavor rules making them anything but boring to play, the only downside is how spikey the models are to paint!
They have a quite good track record in tournaments, with the Beast Pack being one of the top tournament lists around at the moment but they are also not Eldar or Tau so few people will call you out for power gaming.
To me, they sound exactly what your looking for.
