I'm just looking for some answers to a few questions I've been pondering regarding SM wargear. Now, I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum, as to some extent the questions touch of whether or not something is 'legal' for the game, but here goes anyway. Just to put this into context - I don't game (With no plan to do so), but I like to have a fluffy and game-legal force. Please bear with my long explanations, it's just so you can see what I'm getting at

1. Regarding the use of M40 Targeters:

I've been painting up a tactical squad lately, and with the new set being packed with options, together with my bits box, I've assembled some rather interesting poses. I split the squad into two sections, and modeled them as an 'Assault' section and a 'Support' (Fire) section. Now then, the Tactical squad set provides two M40 Scopes as part of the accessories, so I gave one marine in each section a scope and modeled them as 'Designated Marksmen'. However, I then snapped up a full set of Ferrox Umbra bolters of eBay - (They were going cheap, so I pounced on them). Seeing as these bolters have box-magazines and targeters, I was going to give them to two of my assault section marines, with the extended magazines supporting the 'assault' theme of the squad. This would mean that my 'Assault' section would end up with 1x Phobos Bolter, 1x Grav Gun, 1x Mk. V Godwyn Bolter with M40 Scope and 2x Ferrox Umbra with M40 Scopes.

So, in light of the tactical box set only providing you with 2 M40 targeters, does this mean that my assault section would be illegal to use in terms of game rules, and more importantly, un-fluffy in terms of 40k canon?

2. Weaponry and Armour distribution::

I often tend to come up with various ideas for unique SMs, but they often involve various pieces of FW weaponry or armour or bits from other kits. So, my question is: In terms of fluff, do Space Marines have free reign to choose whatever weapons or armour they desire? For example, If I wanted to have a standard tactical squad, outfitted with various armour marks and a range of different types of bolters, would the fluff support this? Or are relics issued to marines as rewards in light of exemplary or long service?

3. Finally, this is a purely fluff based question: GW has a Tyrannic War Veterans pack, so I was inspired to create a similar 'Veterans of Ymgarl' squad in my Salamanders force - ie. dedicated Tyranid slayers forwarded to the Deathwatch. However, in terms of fluff, what do Space Marines usually employ to take on Tyranids?

Once again, I apologise for how long winded my questions are, but I always feel it's best to explain in detail to avoid unnecessary confusion.

That way,then left

About the targeters : they're nothing at all in game-terms, and wouldn't be shocking fluff-wise as far as I know
Most weapons and armours of space marines are mismatched bits of ancient armor and old weapons, so no problem there I think.
Usually flamers and acid-based bolts to take on bigger tyranids

@B0B MaRlEy - Cheers. I thought they may not be anything wrong fluff-wise for the targeters, but I wasn't so sure if they were legal. I'm not even sure why I care, seeing as I don't plan to game - guess it's that minor OCD everyone has Thanks for the other advice as well.

Mixed armour is pretty much standard - the current tactical squad box for example comes with five sets of Mk7 legs, four sets of Mk6 legs and a set of Mk4, with torsos ranging from Mk5 to Mk8.
