There's always chose your own adventure books

Actually this triggered something in my memory. There is a series of books called "Fighting Fantasy" that was designed by Steve Jackson as single player RPGs. They make you roll dice and compare them to character attributes throughout the chose your own adventure book. They did all genres. I remember having great fun with one called "freeway fighter" that was basically Mad Max.

No idea how easy it would be to get at them these days though.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

SJG also published at least two Choose Your Own Adventure style adventures for Car Wars. iirc, both of the ones I remember were reprints of adventures that had originally been published in Auto-Duel Quarterly.

I also remember a random dungeon generator that was published for 1st Edition D&D. I think it was in the DM's Guide... though since it also included Bullywogs (which weren't in the original Monster Manual; they were either in the Fiend Folio or Monster Manual 2), it might only have been included in the version of the DM's Guide with the new cover art.

Tunnels and Trolls. I don't know if the books are still being published, but a lot of the adventure modules were designed for a single player through the same "Choose Your Own Adventures" style play (e.g., turn to page xx). They're great fun, if a little tongue-in-cheek about the setting and monsters.

Warning: Deathtrap Dungeon lives up to its name. Seriously.

I'd, ah, try computer/video RPGs.

The idea of a single-player pen and paper RPG seems kind of self-defeating to me...

Whilst not exactly tabletop RPGs, the games

by Flying Frog Games are pretty heavily themed board games with single play rules.

In Fortune and Glory you are Indiana Jones esque pulp heroes traveling the world, going on adventures and fighting against various evil organizations over mysterious artifacts.

In A Touch of Evil you are basically playing Sleepy Hollow the game - you are various investigators in the 19th(ish) century who have traveled to a small town apparently beset by a monster. To save the townspeople you have to search the town and it's surroundings, investigate the Town Elders ( who may be a great help to you, in league with the monster or the monster itself) and finally track down the monster and hopefully kill it.

Both play quite well as single player games and are thematic enough to work as a role playing experience. Both also have expansions to add to the core game - FanG has a hero pack and a new villain organization pack; AToE has I believe two hero packs (each with a new monster as well), two big box expansions - each with a new area, 4 new investigators and 4 new monsters. (Something Wicked & The Coast).

I heartily endorse either.

Try the Lone Wolf series of choose your own adventure books. Here's my review of the first one:

You can find them all for free here:

GW even makes some of these and they are pretty cool:

I believe the Fighting Fantasy books are still being published, too.

The Way of the Tiger book series were one of my favourite "Fighting Fantasy" type of books.

You play a ninja in a very rich and detailed world. One of the cool things is that you could various fighting techniques in combat. I really loved the series. It's actually where I got my alias from too.

Apparently they had a Kickstarter to come out with book 0 and book 7 of the series too.

I had one of the Lone Wolf Books, but I loved the four "World of Lone Wolf" books where you played the pseudo-Jedi wizard kid. Those were great fun.

They also made a few Middle Earth Themed books. I had both Spy in Isengard and the Traitor at Helms Deep books. Not really as good, but fun if you like Middle Earth.

I'd second these, and you can get them pretty easily these days. I think they republished the first one a couple of years ago, actually.

All you need is a pair of d6, some paper, and a free afternoon or two. The only downside is that if you roll poorly for stats at the start of the game, you might run into some trouble, but all the ones I've played have a 'shop' option early on where you can buy some objects that can counteract that.

They're simple but fun, and there's a tonne out there, as well as an expansion with the rules for playing as a mage instead of the typical 'adventurer' class. They're pretty funny in places, too.

You can get the first few Fighting Fantasy books as gamebook apps now as well. I think no 5 has recently been added to the list.

I've not tried them though.
