Sorry for the lack of updates recently folks. I have had a busy few days at work, what with commissions and whatnot Did Fulgrim for a client, which was nice, but not Horus nice... Should get back on it this week though.

Fantastic work--I think you have more definition on your model than the images on the Forge World site. I like it that you don't have edge highlights on the panels of the armor--there is plenty of detail on the upraised gold parts to give definition to the model. I think because it's so big it's not too busy, but I think it could easily appear so.

I also really appreciate the detail you've got on the pelt, even to the gums and teeth of the wolf head. Fantastic! Another feature that holds it together for me is the way you've kept the gorget silver/steel rather than gold--I think it ties in with the claw and bolter.

I'm also intrigued that you BEGAN with the face--can you speak to why you made that decision? I love how it looks, obviously--I too would love a step-by-step for that, especially the wrinkles and eyebrows--and see how it really makes the model "real" from the beginning, even though the rest is simply primed and later base-coated. But I would not have done that, and am now questioning why.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece!

It's well worth it in my opinion, but I tend to paint more than I play, so I don't buy armies a lot, which gives me more cash to splurge on the things I want to paint

Thanks for the comments sir, to answer your question, I started with the head just because that's my favourite part to paint also, the face is the focal point, and it informed the tones for the rest of the colours on the miniature, if that makes any sense? The rest of the model is really just a massive picture frame for his head. I actually painted his head seperately before gluing it in.

Nice--thanks for the sharing of the philosophy, which I do appreciate. Clearly this is a character...he's just wearing armour. So his face is totally the focal point, (from the beginning, the way you do it) and it really works on your model. The clarification of painting it separately first also helps--it makes the skin tone on the top and sides of the head much more even than is possible when dealing with the nooks & crannies of a glued-in head.

I'm waiting and hoping for a Lion el'Jonson and Sanguinius model to come out--those are my two Space Marine forces. I actually am keen to see Magnus and Russ too--Prospero Burns is one of my favorite novels in the series. But then I hope to eagerly shell out the cash for the painting pleasure and the (hopefully) awesome finished centerpiece model.

That's an incredible work already. If you'd post a step-by-step for the face, I'd be quick to show it to my 40k friends here, so we'd all benefit.

Seconded, I think the community would benefit immensely from that tutorial.

Looks awesome. Forgeworld should ask you to use your pictures as promotion of this model^^

And yes, please post a guide for painting faces. Or better, do a guide for painting the whole model.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any stage-by-stage pics as I worked on the face, and I'm not sure how useful a guide without pics will be. So, I will probably do one using a generic space marine head, with stage-by-stage pics, if you like?

Sure! I am really keen to see any tutorials you might provide, and a bald Space Marine head would be a very similar technique, I would think, despite its smaller size.

Oh man, this just gets better and better. The claws on the Talon really stand out for me, you've achieved a really nice worn and aged metal finish. Naturally you would expect a Primarch's armour to be polished but they are fighting generals afterall. A very impressive piece so far. Have you done much on the base yet?

Not sure what I'm going to do with the base yet. The metal areas have just been basecoated and washed so far. The photo is just quite forgiving I think.

Are those dangling things by his crotch oaths of moment? Or are they leather? I think that a warm reddish leather might help--I feel like the gold decorations are too numerous, and are almost boring despite their detail.

That is not a criticism of your painting, but of the sculpt, I guess. I mean, the basic Space Marine model has some nice open areas of power armour, and while I acknowledge that the armour of a Primarch would be embellished with lots of bits n bobs, I think that there's too much going on, and it's kind of distracting. Like all those little studs--there are just too many for my taste.

In any case, I think having some more red (like the cloak) would help break up the black and gold.

They are going to be a faded leather look. The sculpt is based on the artwork for Horus. Personally I like the studs, as it harks back to the studded armour on the older marks of marine.

I think red would be good--it would tie together with the Eyes of Horus--and leather kind of hearkens back to Roman Legion armor, which is cool.

What are your thoughts about the base? That will also add a lot of context and contrast to the black and gold.

In any case, his face continues to be the focal point, which is awesome--it's great to see the whole model come to life around that central point of (ab) humanity.
