I'm hoping to start an Ork army. Looking to field hoards of Boyz and lots of Bikerz. Any ideas for a semi-competitive army list? My area is pretty casual, so I just want a competent force that can stand its ground. I have no idea what's good though...

Thanks for the help!

I would wait for the new Codex that is rumoured to be the next one after Astra Militarum.
Every advice given now, will probably be obsolete within 2-4 months.
Well, except start painting a lot of boyz

^^ what Kroot said.
Hold off a few months. Whatever you buy now could be absolutely nerfed or even written off altogether!

To go off what they both said, probably just invest in boyz if nothing else.
A Warboss or Ghazzy would work in the H.Q slot until then, I doubt much changes will be made to those two.

Hello friend!

If you want to do that, I'd wait few months, and buy up some boyz while you wait. Not build them or anything, just wait...

Get the new codex when it drops and THEN uild the boyz based on which kit out is better

Buy a bunch of boyz for now and paint them up all nice and purdy like. Bunch meaning 100+ minimum even if youre aim is small scale lol. They might drastically change warbosses (doubtful but they might) but i doubt they'd change boyz to the point of theyre no longer spammed. Would take the point of being an Ork out of the equation if we didnt have ~100 boyz at 1k points lol.

It will take you awhile to paint that many models. Trust me, do it now before you get the cool stuff or they will never get painted. I have ~70 painted boyz and i usually field ~130 boyz lol but i MUST PAINT DA KOOL DINGS FURST!!

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

At this he might as well not b uy them till the book drops... Otherwise, he's basically just giving GW a interest free loan.

I didn't know a new codex was coming out soon, I'll definitely wait until then!

I'll get started on them boyz. The hoard aspect is it why I want to play them. My first army was Nids, but I did a poor job of making hoard, and that kinda tuned me off from the them. Orks will be a fresh start for me! Break out the green spray paint, eh?

Thanks for all the replies!

YAAAA ORKS!

But seriously don't prime them green. The amount of skin that shows on the models is actually less than the rest of the model. The only green is the arms and the head (face if wearing a helmet). I would prime with a more neutral color and go from there.

Depending on what faction/color scheme you go, you may want to get some colored primers for the vehicles.

Given how long it takes to paint an ork army, it's less a free loan and more a headstart on getting a painted army onto the table.

I see your point. I don't know why, but I always assumed they had more green on them. Ah well.

What you could do, with ork boyz, is glue the legs to the bodies and prime them in a suitable clan color and prime the heads and arms green separately. Building the completed model later on to do detailing work.

Priming white and just using basecoats and washes works pretty well apparently theres a thread on that somewhere.

As far as actual listing/army building goes, I have always been told that "Boyz before toys" is the rule. That being, if you have a choice between kitting your Orks out with fancier guns, gear or armor or just adding more baseline Boyz to squads, always choose to add more Boyz.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

ive started priming them with whatever color their armor will be. It is ungodly easier to paint Evil Sunz when you prime them yellow instead of painting it normally lol. Actually the yellow helps the green skin too, since green and yellow are usually used for orcish skin anyway.

But i agree, dont prime green. Only way i would ever advise that is if you were priming the arms/heads separate and/or you were doing a green camo theme, then it'd be fine.

EDIT: Also as of late the "boyz before toyz" motto kinda died this edition. Our boyz get pushed back too much with the "Remove wounds from front" crap. But, since thats the biggest rule of thumb orks have had since the dawn of 40k, i wouldnt doubt it if they add something in the new codex to remedy the situation. Either boyz remove from rear special rule (while everything else is normal) or move the whole damn squad up 1 inch for every 3 boyz that died

I agree that boyz before toyz is not necessary. I run only 40 boyz at 2000 pts.

I have another box of boys sitting around but never ended up putting them together because it seemed like my 20 boy list was working pretty well.

Yup. Theyre objective holders now. 20-30 boyz are still "fairly" cheap and are pretty damn tough to shoot off an objective unless youre dedicating some big toys to doing it.

i miss throwing craploads of dice to shoot then charging to throw more craploads of dice worth of green punches lol

Perhaps Boyz before toyz isn't necessary, but it sure is what I'd like to do. With that in mind, I've been scouring the internet for a cheap alternative to GW's Boyz, because if I going to buy hundreds of models, I'm not looking to pay so much for them...

My first guess at a good replacement seems to be Mantic... I know they aren't as high quality, but they are very cheap... I was wondering if anyone had any insight on how good they work as 40k Orks, mainly with their equipment. I don't need nothing fancy, just a good replacement for Shoota's.

If you want to start an Ork army, don't wait just do it!

Stuff what the others say..

If you want to start small, pick yourself up an Ork battleforce, a Warboss and some Nobz.

That will give you 2 Troops (20 boyz and 5 nobz) and a HQ as well as a Trukk and som Bikes to get you started.

There's nothing in this list that will become outdated in a new Codex and will give you a great platform to expand on.

oh if youre into ebay yea troll all over the place man. it might not be as easy anymore since their new codex is soon-ish but when i started getting my orks a year and a half or so ago i found so many epic ebay deals. I am STILL opening boxes from the last deal i got almost a year ago lol. Some people get pissed that their army isnt roflstomp win anymore so they sell it off for cheap - $1250 worth of orks for 650.....i'll take the used ork army for that price any day rofl

And even if they come out with new models you want, youre an ork...kitbash lol. i have some unopened boxes of models i have no intentions of using because i got them for next to nothing, i hang on to them for future conversions.
