The disease is viral, not bacterial. Though high population density is no doubt a factor in the high rate of infection, but it seems to mainly infect piglets.
I guess it's worth noting that virus won't kill all the pigs and it will most likely be contained, but the price to the farmers and the consumers will probably get higher.

Definite truth to that statement. The question is, though, how many pigs get lost to this.

At worst this will effect a couple years of production, more likely just one. At which point the Virus will have burnt itself out.
If it is indeed confined to a specific age of pigs it will be fairly easy enough to isolate. It's when it effects all ages that you can have trouble.

That's what made me facepalm, even if it ends up not being he culprit.
We learned nothing from feeding cows to cows who then ended up dying (and probably still fed to cows). So now we feed pigs to pigs and wonder if it could me spreading some sort of virus.
It just seems like a horrible idea, although I did feed bacon to my in-laws pet-miniature pig..

There is a slight difference between feeding pigs pigs and cows cows.
Pigs are naturally cannibalistic, as well as being omnivores in general, so them eating meat/themselves isn't completely unnatural. Cows are 100% herbivores on the other hand.
That said, if you do do this you should make sure the meat is disease free from a purely practical purpose. Losing your stock isn't profitable. And we can be assured they'll either stop this or take extra precautions.

That is an insane amount. Very bad indeed.
I thought this article was about wild hogs, but fortunately it isn't. I love shooting hogs. Some of my best memories of being out in the country are from throwing 30 round magazines of .223 into wild hogs.
